Excerpt from Water Purification Plants and Their Operation: Second Edition With these ends in view Chapter IV and parts of Chapter V have been entirely rewritten. It is difficult to adequately; cover the interpretation of tests in a limited space and in such a manner as to be available for non-technical men. The treat meflt may seem somewhat arbitrary, but it is believed that care ful reading of the articles on interpretation Will convince the trained bacteriologist that they are basically sound and err on the side of safety. Excerpt from The Purification of Sewage and Water As no work in this connection can be proceeded with, without a full knowledge of the means by which the results of the various experiments can be checked, the necessary analytical methods most suitable for that purpose will be described, and the most simple and effective processes given at sufficient length to enable the experimentalist to conduct such tests for himself. Having obtained the results of these tests as may be required, he will find their bearing upon the work in hand fully dealt with and explained. Excerpt from The Filtration Plant of the Danville Water Company The water supply is obtained from the North Branch of the Vermilion River, a typical prairie stream, which drains approximately 275 sq. Miles of flat and slightly rolling prairie country Wlth a rich black soil, ninety per cent of which is under cultivation. The flow of this stream is subject to extreme variations, due to the nature of the country drained, and to the unequal distribution of rainfall throughout the year. A no accurate data were at hand from which to calculate these variations of flow, they were annroximated by various formulas and methods, the results of which follow. Excerpt from Water Purification In the following pages it is intended to treat only of the first division of this subject, since the second covers too broad a field to bring it Within the mom of this volume. Both the kind and the amount of impurities in a polluted water affect the methods which can be employed for its purification, and this is so peculiarly true of sewage that its treatment has become an art in itself. Those waters which are to be purified for drinking purposes demand that a degree Of purity shall be produced which is not possible and usually unnecessary in the case Of sewage. The purification of the latter is, as a rule, quite incomplete as compared with that required for a safe drinking water, and obviously the Object to be attained is quite difl'erent. In the case of waters to be treated for making them suitable for steam-boiler purposes, or for general industrial uses, a slightly different Object is sought. The softening of hard waters or the removal of compounds of iron or manganese may be an integral part of the purification of a public drinking water supply, in which case it is combined with those processes utilized for making a water hygienically safe. Of course it is quite possible to carry on purification for industrial purposes independently of the more refined methods used for drinking water, and frequently this course is pursued in connection with manufacturing plants. Excerpt from The Purification of Public Water Supplies: A Comparison in Methods, Cost and Results The fact that the percentage of removal of this abnormally pol luted water is so great, indicates the most excellent results obtained by the process; and the fact that the resulting count in the ozonized water is high in this case should not detract from the method nor be discouraging to the inventor of the process, since in no case will a city be compelled to render potable a supply from such a source.
