Excerpt from An Angler's Year But this is only half-truth, and it must not be forgotten that the resiliency of a light rod is often permanently damaged by the use of a heavy tapered line, and that a light line will not bring out the full spring of a powerful rod. Excerpt from An Angler at Large Ear H. T. S It is a commonplace that there are too many books on angling. My instinct, therefore, is to follow the established custom of authors who write on that subject, and hypocritically to apologise for what I have done. Excerpt from Angling Days and an Angler's Books These sketches, which originally appeared in T he Angler, were reprinted in the hope that they might prove interesting to other brethren of the craft. They are now reissued in a cheaper and more accessible shape in the belief that a wider circle of readers will be reached. The writer is by no means accomplished in the gentle art, but has derived immense benefit, like many others, in the intervals of a busy life, as well as in seasons of physical weakness, from this innocent and restful pursuit. To keep life wholesome, every man should have a hobby and what Walton called the contempla tive man's recreation is also an excellent relief to busy, overtaxed men. Lovers of reading will not complain of the extracts from the writer's favourite books. The illustrations are from photos taken by Mr. T. Bramwell, Alston, Cumberland. Excerpt from An Angler's Hours I cannot plead the urgency of friends for its production. One's friends, every man's friends, are nowadays too busy com mencing author themselves to be solicitous in the preliminaries of alien publication. With the results it is different. There is much kindly and mutual reading; there is exchange of candid opinion; and quite a fortunate number of authors would be justified in stamping John Grolier's ex cellent motto, et umz'corum, on the binding of their own works. This is all passing pleasant, but it robs me of a possible excuse. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Notes and Reminiscences of My Life as an Angler The following pages were written merely for the perusal of my children, in order to bring before them, as clearly and faithfully as possible, a picture of their father's life as an angler. When I became aware that many of my personal friends were also desirous to possess a record in which so many of their deeds with rod and line were inscribed together with my own, I yielded to a wish so flattering to myself, and the little work was printed for private circulation among them. The reception which it has met with from the many distin guished anglers whom I am proud to call my friends has been most gratifying, and I am accordingly emboldened to take a further step, and send it forth into the wide field of angling literature, there to abide the criticisms of the general public. During four years I steadily refused to take such a course, feeling persuaded that an autobiography of this character which detailed so many particulars relating to other persons, was more fitly restricted to a limited circle of readers. After however I had received eighty letters begging for its publi cation, together with a vast number of verbal requests, I yielded, in the hope that no one whose name is mentioned in its pages will be in the smallest degree wounded, and that the general reader will deal gently with the numerous deficiencies to which no one can be so keenly alive as the author. Excerpt from Fishing Probably few persons who visited the late International Fisheries Exhibition in South Kensington could fail'to have been struck by the multiplicity, and, to the un initiated, complexity of the engines and appliances used in the capture of fish. The Observation applies even more to the 'angler'-a generic term that I have a special objection to, by the way, but let us say to the fisherman who uses a rod - than to the 'fisherman' proper, whose weapons are net and hand-line, and who 'occupies his business in great waters.'
