Religion is fundamental to contemporary Puerto Rican society. From the cosmology of the Indigenous Taíno, to the wide range of Judeo-Christian churches and sects, to the practitioners of spiritism, Afro-Caribbean religions, and witchcraft, religious practice in its many forms permeates the lives of most Puerto Ricans. Communities of the Soul illuminates the landscape and history of religion in Puerto Rico from the beliefs and practices of the Taíno to the religious diversity of the present day. Throughout its history, religion in Puerto Rico has braided institutional forms and popular practices, yet has always been a community-based process – made by the people. When the island was under Spanish colonial rule, the formal but weak presence of Catholicism meant that Puerto Ricans cultivated their religious experiences within families and local communities as much as within the structures of the church. These communal practices continued as Puerto Ricans joined Protestant denominations – particularly evangelical Pentecostalism – after the American conquest of the island in 1898. In the second half of the twentieth century, religious diversity increased with the formation of Jewish and Muslim communities, as well as numerous local evangelical congregations. Even as Puerto Rican society becomes more cosmopolitan and diverse, popular devotions and ritualistic practices remain an important part of everyday life. Today Puerto Ricans are the largest single ethnic group in the city boroughs of the Archdiocese of New York. Oxcart Catholicism on Fifth Avenue presents a fascinating exploration and analysis of the Catholic church's efforts in New York City to meet the needs of migrant Puerto Ricans. Ana Maria Diaz-Stevens combines socio-historical methods and the insights of her personal participation in this process to create the first book-length assessment of this important event in twentieth-century American Catholic history. Diaz-Stevens begins by tracing the historical development of Catholicism in Puerto Rico, first under Spain and then after 1898 under the United States. She suggests the ways in which Puerto Ricans differed from the Irish, Italian, Polish, or other Catholic groups that came to New York. At the same time, she breaks new ground by describing significant differences between Puerto Ricans and Mexican-Americans in the practice of religion. After examining how institutional Catholicism in New York had grown from a loose mix of early nineteenth-century village parishes into a centralized cosmopolitan institution by the middle of the twentieth century, Diaz-Stevens presents a brief review of three historical periods of Puerto Rican migration to the city. She details the development of the "basement church" among Puerto Ricans as a specialized means of maintaining continuity with island traditions within a big city environment. She also discusses key church leaders, such as Francis Cardinal Spellman, Ivan Illich, Robert Fox and Robert Stem, describing how their attempts to deal with a people who presented "problems" evolved into an innovative ministry to Puerto Ricans. In the process, the Spanish-speaking Apostolate moved beyond existing models of ethnic assimilation into a post-Vatican activism, oriented towards social and community needs.

The early twentieth century is one of the main periods of Puerto Rican colonial history characterized by a dramatic change in politics, culture, and religion. After the victory of the United States in the Spanish-Cuban-American war, Puerto Rico became a US colony, ending 400 years of Spanish colonial rule and dramatically changing the Puerto Rican political panorama with the rise of the United States as a twentieth-century empire. Immediately after, several US-based mainline Protestant churches drew plans to start mission projects in Puerto Rico and among the distinctive features of the new missionaries was the arrival of hymnals. While US Protestantism in Puerto Rico has received notable scholarly attention, the musical practices of the missionaries and, later, the first congregations have barely been addressed. Through the study of the first hymnals and hymn books more widely used in Puerto Rico during the first decades of the twentieth century, we can observe trends of musical aesthetics and theological dogma that Puerto Ricans were exposed to during that time. I suggest that, in terms of music, the ontology of these hymnals is characterized by the Anglo-American hymnody tradition, a condition made more complex when inserted into the colonial context of institutionalized Protestantism in Puerto Rico. Drawing from previous historiographic scholarly works done on Protestant hymnody in Puerto Rico, this study explores the origins and contents of the first five Protestant hymnals in Spanish used in Puerto Rico from 1898 to 1924, while also providing a more comprehensive groundwork for future research on this topic. The hymnals under study are the 1893 and 1895 editions of Himnario evangélico, Nuevo himnario evangélico (1914), Himnos de gloria (1921), and Cantos sagrados (1924).
