The concept of real-world studies (RWS) has emerged in recent years and differs from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in design and implementation. The importance of real-world data (RWD) and real-world evidence (RWE) in the context of medical and health decision-making is rising. This is relevant for the many and diverse medical traditions globally. RWS can bring new ideas and methodologies for clinical efficacy and safety evaluation of different specific preparations used in a Traditional Medicine (TM) and allow a high-quality assessment of the evidence for specific uses of such preparations. TM, including Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Traditional European Medicine (TEM) or Traditional Indian Medicines (TIM) as well as interventions using herbal medicines or natural products such as dietary fibre are all examples of practices which can benefit from RWS. For example, TCM is a unique form of medical practice based on a complex philosophy as well as on real-world clinical experience and evidence. RWE is essential for understanding the evidence one can derive from the outcomes of medical practice. It is of particular interest for understanding TCM diagnosis and treatment. In addition, there is potential for real-world traditional medical therapies based on other cultural and philosophical principles (natural products or herbal medicines). Currently, RWS is mostly utilized for evaluation the clinical efficacy of Traditional medicine (TM) treatments, including post-marketing re-evaluation of new medications or traditional classical prescriptions, as well as TM-related mechanistic research.

Known as the “roof of the world,” the Tibetan Plateau is the highest and largest plateau on Earth. Tibetan Plateau hosts several mountain ecosystems characterized by high elevations, cold conditions, and a wide range in water availability. Its unique physical and geographical environment includes ecosystems typical for alpine regions, classified as alpine grasslands, which account for 50-70% of the total land area of the Tibetan plateau. Most of these grasslands contain fragile tundra-like environments which are seriously affected by anthropogenic modifications and whose restoration presents a challenge. These natural grassland types include alpine deserts, alpine steppes, alpine meadows, and alpine swamp meadows along precipitation gradients, as well as the transition types between them. Alpine grasslands remain subject to severe degradation by multiple factors, mainly overgrazing and climate warming. As a result, grasslands exhibit a decreased capacity to support biodiversity and complexity, and more generally, ecosystem functions. Therefore, these changes also affect social and recreational activities and restrict access to clean water and food by local communities.
The field of proteomics has advanced considerably over the past two decades. The ability to delve deeper into an organism’s proteome, identify an array of post-translational modifications and profile differentially abundant proteins has greatly expanded the utilization of proteomics. Improvements to instrumentation in conjunction with the development of these reproducible workflows have driven the adoption and application of this technology by a wider research community. However, the full potential of proteomics is far from being fully exploited in plant biology and its translational application needs to be further developed. In 2011, a group of plant proteomic researchers established the International Plant Proteomics Organization (INPPO) to advance the utilization of this technology in plants as well as to create a way for plant proteomics researchers to interact, collaborate and exchange ideas. The INPPO conducted its inaugural world congress in mid 2014 at the University of Hamburg (Germany). Plant proteomic researchers from around the world were in attendance and the event marked the maturation of this research community.
