The first book on foster care written from foster mothers' perspectives, They're All My Children voices the often painful experiences of contemporary U.S. foster mothers as they struggle to mother and care-work in the face of exploitative social relations with the state. Drawing on extensive ethnographic research, Wozniak, herself a former foster mother and an anthropologist, presents and analyzes women's personal stories about fostering to reflect on the larger socio-cultural context of American family lifenamely, how we think about kinship, identity, and work. Foster mothers construct enduring kinship relationships with children, and often with the children's biological families. These relationships enhance children's chances to growth and thrive and in turn extend women's kin relationships into often distant and disparate communities. Wozniak also highlights the economic side of fostering to show how foster mothers are both mothers and workers; foster children are both providers and provided for, adored sentimental children and economic figures. Through in-depth interviews and participant observation, Wozniak argues that we have not gone far enough in understanding the experiences of these women whose life work lies outside the usual boundaries. Nor have child welfare gone far enough in revising the theories upon which child welfare policies are based. Foster mothers and their experiences challenge the patriarchal, nuclear family ideals upon which foster care programs are based, a challenge that They're All My Children takes forward.

Being a parent is more challenging today than it's ever been. In All About Children, this thoroughly reliable and effective handbook, clinical psychologist Dr Tony Humphreys outlines effective ways of parenting and positive responses to difficult behaviour by children. Sometimes the task of parenting seems overwhelming. At others it provides great fulfilment and joy. It is always unpredictable; the challenges are forever changing and much of what we might have learned from our own parents seems quite irrelevant now. Parenting is not learned by instinct; it requires many complex skills. Parents have responsibility for the physical, emotional, social, sexual, behavioural, educational, creative and spiritual development of their children, and at the same time they must love them unconditionally. Tony Humphreys recognises the many and varied challenges faced by parents today. In All About Children, he provides an invaluable resource for parents by taking the questions they most frequently ask and providing thoughtful and comprehensive answers. He begins by pointing out that in order to develop parenting skills, each parent must first understand themselves and be prepared to continually update their knowledge as the needs of their children alter as they grow older. He goes on to deal with the practical aspects of everyday parenting skills and then looks at different aspects of challenging behaviour, both by children and parents. The book concludes with a chapter on learning and education, two core concerns of every parent. In a helpful question-and-answer format, All About Children provides today's parents with not only the vital information they require but also points out the skills they need to carry out their demanding task effectively. Wonderfully soulful collection of real life stories of a young country girl growing up in Southeast Arkansas.
It is said that everyone has a story to tell, a voice that deserves to be heard. There are many thousands of children with special needs who have long been ignored, rejected and excluded from our schools, our communities, and, sadly, from our Bible classes. We believe that these children are loved deeply and completely by our Lord and that they too are called to come unto Him. This book speaks to the heart and to the head. Teachers and pastors will find inspiration and information, reminding them that God calls us to include all children, no matter the challenge. In addition, the book includes wonderfully practical elements with many ideas that can be easily integrated into any classroom. By combining philosophy and strategies, this book will equip the typical church volunteer teacher to meet the needs of all the children in her classroom.
