Excerpt from Elements of Algebra for Beginners IT 18 becoming more and more evident each year that a pupil receives more culture, makes greater progress in study, and, consequently, is better prepared for life, by beginning algebra early, than by Spending the same amount of time on arithmetic. And when properly presented by both teacher and text-book, the study of algebra has never failed to be interesting and profitable. This book is written with the hope that it may contribute largely toward making algebra both valuable and popular to the young. To accomplish this end we have made the equation the most prominent idea of each chapter. In the first section we have made the transition from arithmetic to algebra so simple and easy that no pupil will experience any difficulty in mastering the elements of the science. A third feature of this book is a clear and logical discus sion of all those processes that throw light and life into the Operations of arithmetic. We express our sincere thanks for the assistance we have received from experienced teachers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Beginner's Algebra This book aims to give a working knowledge of elementary algebra. It supposes in the pupil such knowledge of arithmetic as is usually obtained before entrance to the highest grade in the grammar school. It introduces multiplication immediately after addition, and teaches factoring while teaching multiplication. It insures by this arrangement a saving of time, accu racy in the use of signs, and an early familiarity with the structure of those expressions which form the staple of algebra. It treats the equation as derived from the problem. It leads to the problem by exercises in expression and in forming equalities. It helps the pupil to become familiar with problems of the ordinary types by means of exercises in their construction. Its purpose throughout is to tell the pupil little that he can see, and to help him to see by employing well directed questions. It is a teaching book, useful to any beginner. Excerpt from Algebra for Beginners: With Numerous Examples In determining the subjects to be included and the space to be assigned to each, the author has been guided by the papers given at the various examinations in ele mentary Algebra which are now carried on in this country. The book may be said to consist of three parts. The first part contains the elementary operations in integral and fractional expressions; it occupies eighteen chapters. The second part contains the solution of equations and pro hlems; it occupies twelve chapters. The subjects contained in these two parts constitute nearly the whole of every ex amination paper which was consulted, and accordingly they are treated with ample detail of illustration and exercise. The third part forms the remainder of the book; it con sists of various subjects which are introduced but rarely into the examination papers, and which are therefore more briefly discussed. Excerpt from An Easy Algebra for Beginners: Being a Simple, Plain Presentation of the Essentials of Elementary Algebra, and Also Adapted to the Use of Those Who Can Take Only a Brief Course in This Study Such definitions and rules as are common to arithmetic and algebra have been given without labored illustration, or have been assumed as already familiar to the pupil. As a preparation for the solution of problems by means of equations, well graded steps are given in the section preceding these problems for practice in the translation of quantitative statements from ordinary language into algebraic expressions. Excerpt from Grammar School Algebra: An Introduction to Algebra for Beginners These introductory lessons in algebra may be readily mastered in the last year of the grammar school. They may be given in one or two exercises each week during the year, or, what is better, they may take the place of arithmetic the last half of the year. They will be found not only an excellent preparation for the study of elementary algebra in the high school, but also of special interest and value to pupils whose schooling may end with the elementary school. The problems may also be solved by analysis, thus obviating the use of a separate mental arithmetic in the eighth school year. Excerpt from A First Book in Algebra IN preparing this book, the author had especially in mind classes in the upper grades Of grammar schools, though the work will be found equally well adapted to the needs of any classes of beginners. The ideas which have guided in the treatment Of the subject are the following: The study of algebra is a continuation of what the pupil has been doing for years, but it is expected that this new work will result in a knowledge of general truths about numbers, and an in creased power of clear thinking. All the differences between this work and that pursued in arithmetic may be traced to the introduction of two new elements, namely, negative numbers and the representation of numbers by letters. The solution of problems is one of the most valuable portions of the work, in that it serves to develop the thought-power of the pupil at the same time that it broadens his knowledge of numbers and their relations. Powers are developed and habits formed only by per sistent, long-continued practice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
