The present exhibition -winner of the Fondart 2006 prize- is a co-curatorship of German curator Alfonso Hug (curator of the last Biennales of Sao Paulo) and Francisco Brugnoli, director of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Santiago de Chile and includes the participation of 12 visual artists: 6 Chilean and 6 international, mostly Brazilians who previously exhibited in Río de Janeiro. The exhibition includes performances, installations, photographs and art objects (some created using disposal material) that represent the relationship of Latin American Baroque art with contemporary aesthetics.
This essay deals with the missionary work of the Society of Jesus in today’s Micronesia from the seventeenth to the twentieth century. Although the Jesuit missionaries wanted to reach Japan and other Pacific islands, such as the Palau and Caroline archipelagos, the crown encouraged them to stay in the Marianas until 1769 (when the Society of Jesus was expelled from the Philippines) to evangelize the native Chamorros as well as to reinforce the Spanish presence on the fringes of the Pacific empire. In 1859, a group of Jesuit missionaries returned to the Philippines, but they never officially set foot on the Marianas during the nineteenth century. It was not until the twentieth century that they went back to Micronesia, taking charge of the mission on the Northern Marianas along with the Caroline and Marshall Islands, thus returning to one of the cradles of Jesuit martyrdom in Oceania.
The books in the Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series demonstrate the University Press of Florida’s long history of publishing Latin American and Caribbean studies titles that connect in and through Florida, highlighting the connections between the Sunshine State and its neighboring islands. Books in this series show how early explorers found and settled Florida and the Caribbean. They tell the tales of early pioneers, both foreign and domestic. They examine topics critical to the area such as travel, migration, economic opportunity, and tourism. They look at the growth of Florida and the Caribbean and the attendant pressures on the environment, culture, urban development, and the movement of peoples, both forced and voluntary. The Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series gathers the rich data available in these architectural, archaeological, cultural, and historical works, as well as the travelogues and naturalists’ sketches of the area in prior to the twentieth century, making it accessible for scholars and the general public alike. The Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series is made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, under the Humanities Open Books program.
The exhibition is the revival of an historic cultural resistance movement during Brazil's 1980s military regime, when a group of then young and rebellious artists exhibited in the famous Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro. Now prominent names in Brazilian art they present a retrospective selection of their most significant work. Exhibition curated by Marcus Lontra.
