Trials and Triumphs: The Story of TheNews is an engaging narrative of an era of journalistic daring and partisanship on the side of democracy, justice and equity. It chronicles and examines how the founding team of TheNews magazine, their editors and reporters and their support staff endured torture and imprisonment, harassment and abduction, seizures and closures, proscription and arson, threats of death and even death, because of their fundamental commitment to share public intelligence in a society and polity which had been hijacked by the most perverse military regimes that Nigeria ever experienced. From General Ibrahim Babangida's obstinate subversion of the national ethos to General Sani Abacha's evil reign, TheNews and its sister publications stood firmly at the barricades, hand-in-hand with other pro-democratic forces, proclaiming to the martial adventurers that the wisdom and liberty of a collective people would never be surrendered to the ambitions of puny fascists. This is not only a story of "guerrilla journalism" in Nigeria which helped to defeat martial fascsim, it is also the story of a specific conjecture in a people's history where questions of democracy and justice, equity and fair play, federalism and egalitarianism, regional divides and ethno-political domination were confronted headlong by a press that formed the pivot of the emergent civil society.
Dreams are ancient, powerful and mysterious. From the Pharaohs of old Egypt to the commons of English manors, the beauty of dreams haunt their futures. Aiye-Ko-ooto irresistibly wrestles the irascible in 50 poems of this anthology. Where green prairies meet the foot of hills, "Blue bonnets in bloom" grow. Rosy pictures of the time to come. Making kings and poor alike; dance. Also, dreams color; consoling us in hard times -"Multiple births of autumn". Then our moments in the wings are traded on the mounds of nights. In happy dream night, moon is forgotten - we become; toast of the party. Perky, energetic and vivacious. Our spirits are high. This makes us attractive "the dapple sky". When all our thoughts are not majestic but romantic. This anthology does not rest the count until you "ride the clouds" With these poems, you may sleep in the truth of your dreams!!!
Through our struggles, strength is built for success. Inner battles plague even the strongest among us. Aiyeko-ooto in this anthology of 50 poems gathers the elements of fighting in the trenches of life. Where souls are troubled, the resolve to survive is not waned. Such is the spirit of mankind. In life and love there are troughs and crests. Only for the dead is the sound of winds without rise and fall of shrills. In 5 movements; these poems highlight the times "Out of Darkness', when bottled tears run down the cheeks. Followed by the "Thirst for victory", even when we wear "torn robes and ashes" before "Freedom Reigns"
What a wonderful Summer it is. I wash, spit and drink love. From the rising of the sun to the going down of the same. Perfect! If there is ever an adjective for the sunny days and moonlights. I could find beauty in anything and everything. The nights; left hope for a morning of reunion. The afternoons for rendezvous, and evenings for long walks in gardens. Tell me what else is held back from love? Aiyeko-ooto observes a summer of lovers. 50 poems in 5 movements, greens are luxuriant, when you are happy. The colors of flowers radiant and shimmering. Even though a few spots of rain interrupt our rituals. We justify it; with a need to cool the heat. OK; so maybe it's not perfect. Soft as sandy shores are, don't you get few grains; blown into your eyes? Since when has that stopped anyone; going to the beach? If Summer comes again, I'll be there!
In the interplay of dialogue and conscience, logic is side played by emotions. What we feel is reflected in how we respond to issues of life we face.We build hopes, amidst distractions of timing. Often without helpers of dreams and eventual reality we face. Our life, loves and living are semantically recaptured in this poetry piece, context our imperfections. This piece is history, current and future woven with nettles of simple everyday feelings. There is never a smooth venture into any woods. Life itself is a wood adventure. In our walk we face issues, some resolved others not, we make mounds of hope; believing things could be better. Isn't that why we keep on? Nevertheless the time spent in the wood of life is not without distractions - some entertain us, others iritate us. Imperfect in balance; yet often we appear to carry a roadmap through this wood maze - a dream. Poetically, isn't this the sum of the eventual reality we face?
"Words are flittering through our imaginations, who can capture, record and tune them?" Just like words is time. Who can record time with the changes in seasons. Yet, we all go through seasons whether we like it or not. Aiyeko-ooto, explores the divisions even in the happiest of all peoples. He finds that there is amazement, admiration, vigilance and grief. All superimposed on every mirth we enjoy. In 60 poems and these as its 4 movements, he attempts to capture a reason to dance whether we are in or out of season of laughter. The sum of it all is we are the true records of the seasons we have gone through. Our countenance, willing souls and attitudes tell all about how we spent those seasons and our struggle as they change and change us all.
Every wave of the ocean, has a rise, a crest and a fall. But this is not the end of its journey. So long as there is another wave after the first and another after that. Every wave takes us farther into the ocean. Metaphorically, the ocean is our destination, our dream, our the world. It is our journey through the maze of love, politics, dedications, encounters and experiences. We have to start somewhere, but that is only our beginning. The waves coming behind; gather higher amplitudes than the waves before them. Such as in life, every opportunity to love, brings more understanding, and shared experiences, these shape who we are and often, what we become. In our crafts, we start with making little things which become building blocks of our sculpting imaginations and dreams. Aiyeko-ooto, in 5 waves and 50 poems launched his first wave of enduring Odo-alamo series. It is only the beginning. Upon this wave would grow broader strokes, sculpturing strikes and sprays of wise songs and poetic murals in future!
Aiyeko-ooto in search of truth, mines in geological sites. This 50 poem anthology, relates metaphorically the depth we must excavate to find love. Especially, when others cynically dismiss it. It is rough to get going, but it gets better. Every gem was a stone. Every pebble trampled upon by many a feet. Until, someone made a promise to make the pebble shine. Before then, there was no "Daylight Promise". No one asked "why you crawl; when you could fly". Who paid the "Price of your Dream?" The judgment we received, is the pain of our transition through "Eclipses of Attitudes". Finally, pebble shines; and becomes a "Dancing Masquerade". Now, everyone comes from far and wide, admire and glimpse upon our beauty. They'll pay to see us dance. Not realizing they once trampled on us, as a common pebble by the open beach of life.
