Of the around 20 biennials and triennials worldwide devoted to architecture, the Venice Architecture Biennale is the most prominent, considered as the world's leading biannual architecture festival. The participating architects selected every second year come from around the world to engage in the most important information exchange in the world of architecture. Aires Mateus Architects is the architectural practice operated by two brothers, Manuel and Francisco Aires Mateus. They have been invited five times to participate in Venice. This publication will introduce the five architectural installations they contributed to the biennales in the last decade. The publication consists of five individual parts, each of them a separate book, and held together by a French-fold-dustjacket. Each book is dedicated to one exhibition in Venice. The beautiful projects presented in this volume set an outstanding example of architectural installations reflecting space in a sensitive, poetic and mathematical way. Over the last three decades, Aires Mateus have gained international recognition for their contemporary reinterpretation of architectural traditions in Portugal. Their work is poetic in nature, and much of it is based on constant exploration and experimentation. Their abstract architectural installations are the artistic manifestation of this work. VOIDS: The first time Aires Mateus presented Portugal at the Venice Biennale was in 2010. The show was curated by Kazuyo Sejima from Sanaa, the first woman ever to work as chief curator of the Venice Architecture biennale. Aires Mateus' installation "VOID" was strikingly simple, as their minimalistic architecture often is. An entire room in the Central Pavilion in the Giardini was filled with abstract models of Aires Mateus' projects. Their installation investigated the extraction of volumes, connecting positive building forms with corresponding negative space. This relationship between positive and negative spaces has always existed inherently, but rarely been so clearly and understandably articulated. RADIX: In 2012, the installation took the form of a single large sculpture which greeted the visitors in the Arsenale area. The open and closed arches of "Radix", a steel structure clad with rusting steel panels on the outside and with a golden finish on the inside, could be perceived as a continuation of the arches of the shipyards in the docks of the Venice Arsenale. Despite the heavy steel construction, the arches of the pseudo-rectangular block and the brownish and golden color has a light appearance; it is as if it were made of wood. The arches are supported at three points, with the main arch overhanging the docks. FENDA: In 2016 the participation again took the form of an installation, but this time the visitors could enter a beautifully illuminated, mysterious cube, with which the architects symbolically marked the return to the essence of space. Space was considered from the perspective of its relationship with the human, that is anthropologically. The installation served as a reminder that this is still the essential value of architecture. FENDA is a cube with outside dimensions of 7x7x4 meters. The visitor enters by opening a black curtain, and passes through a one-meter-thick concrete wall to enter. Inside, one finds oneself in a kind of cave. The slit of light from the entrance opens and closes the visitor's path, changing the scale and perception of space. FIELD: Though it is another beautiful sculpture, this installation differs from the others: this time, one cannot enter the installation, one can only look inside. The book cover shows one of the views that the visitor can glimpse. The curators described this work as a sensitive, poetic and mathematical reflection on space. What the visitor perceives, the smell, colors and texture, remind of nature. Subtle textures or spots of color emerge from the dark under a diffuse and warm light, evoking the beauty of controlled landscapes and blurring the limits between natural and artificial. GROUND: the upcoming exhibition at this year's biennale will again ... Every installation will be introduced with a short essay, especially written by philosophers, architects, and an art critic for this publication. With contributions by Francisco and Manuel Aires Mateus, Ricardo Carvalho, Nuno Crespo, Sofia Pinto Basto, Paulo Pires Basto, and Delfim Sardo.

The design of a house always represents a sort of research project. Intense, for the familiarity we have with the program. Unique, for the specificity and peculiarity of each situation. Indeed, the house is the program we are most familiar with. Starting from well-defined constraints and possibilities, each house materializes through construction, defining its own function and appearance. Therefore, the question of materiality becomes crucial, as it defines a boundary, a well-defined field of forces, a new centrality. "Kaira Looro Competition - Sacred Architecture" is an international architectural competition which has as project theme the architectural celebration of the cult in a remote place on earth, where the shortage of materials and high-performing technology pushes the architecture to the branch of sustainability and integration with landscape and culture. Kaira Looro, that in Mandingo language means "Architecture for Peace", is not just architecture, but it also represents the link to a culture, a spirituality and research of interiority.Introspection, spirituality and divinity are the elements around which the sacred architecture revolves. The light and the lightness of the materials join sacred and profane, creating an architecture that, through spaces and forms, try to invite humans to an introspective research . This book collects and describes the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes and also 5 mentions and 10 finalists of the competition, nominated by the jury. The competition is organized by the Nonprofit Organization "Balouo Salo" with the collaboration of the University of Tokyo, Kengo Kuma & Associates, CNAPPC, Embassy and Consulate of Senegal, Sedhiou Government, the City of Tanaf and others. The sponsor Four Points by Sheraton Catania provided cash prizes for the winning projects. The winning project and the finalists are named by an internationally renowned jury made up of: Kengo Kuma, Ko Nakamura (University of Tokyo), A. Ghirardelli (SBGA ), A. Muzzonigro (Stefano Boeri Architects), R. Bouman (Mohn + Bouman Architects) C. Chiarelli (Arcò), A. Ferrara (Juri Troy Architects), Pilar Diez Rodriguez, R. Kasik (X Architekten), S. D'Urso (University of Catania), I. Gomis (Tanaf Mayor), I. Lutri (InArch), W. Baricchi (CNAPPC). The goal of the contest is to create a symbolic sacred architecture for the whole nation which can improve the precarious conditions of the project area. All proceeds, derived from membership contributions of the participants, are donated to the humanitarian project "A Bridge for Life" in Senegal, to save 80,000 people now at risk of survival. The book also collects 11 projects developed during the Kaira Looro workshop. These projects are focused on the traditional economies of the Casamance region and specifically the Valley of Tanaf. Each proposal, seen in the general master plan, will have to consider the guidelines based on local socio-cultural peculiarities. All of the proceeds of this book will be donated to the non-profit Balouo Salo.
Balkrishna Doshi (born 1927 in Pune, India) played a pivotal role in shaping of postcolonial architecture in India. He is a pioneer in addressing crucial issues of social housing and urbanization in India. Doshi influenced the development of Indian architecture significantly through his teaching and lecturing activities and played a major role in the development of Ahmedabad into a center of Indian architectural education. This anthology assembles a selection of his writings, such as lectures, articles and essays.0Doshi, who worked for Le Corbusier in Paris for six years in the 1950s, has also always sought contacts with Western architects, for example by promoting the work of Louis Kahn in India.0The book is published to accompany the opening of the Balkrishna Doshi Exhibition at the Architekturmuseum der TUM, Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich.

The Place of Silence explores the poetics and politics of silence in architecture. Bringing together contributions by internationally recognized scholars in architecture and the humanities, it explores the diverse practices, affects, politics and cultural meanings of silence, silent places and silent buildings in historical and contemporary contexts. What counts as silence in specific situations is highly relative, and the term itself carries complex and varied significations which make it a revealing field of study. Chapters explore a range of themes, from the apparent 'loss of silence' in the contemporary urban world; through designed silent spaces; to the forced silences of oppression, catastrophe, or technological breakdown. The book unfolds a rich and complementary array of perspectives which address – through the lens of architecture and place – questions of sound, atmosphere, and attunement, together building a volume which will form the key scholarly resource on architecture and silence.
