In the entertaining collection Laughing At Life: Tall Tales & Other Short Stories, author Mike Benn shares many of his amusing life experiences as he delves into "tough" questions, such as: Have you ever caught a duck-while fishing? When your children say jump, do you just ask how high? What happens when the doctor becomes the patient? How significant is that red flashing light on your car's instrument panel? Join Benn in his search for "the perfect stool", and experience his frustration after purchasing the latest state-of-the-art home cinema equipment to the envy of all his friends-and after six months, still not being able to get it to work. Laughing at Life takes you on a trip-sometimes more like a stumble-down memory lane, from Benn's childhood in Perth, Australia, to his present-day life in Israel. Encompassing subjects ranging from living in a household of females to the adventures of traveling, and from coping with modern technology to personal health issues, Laughing at Life draws you into the Benn's world, allowing you to view the humorous side of life's challenges that daily affect each and every one of us.
Zomorod (Cindy) Yousefzadeh is the new kid on the block...for the fourth time. California’s Newport Beach is her family’s latest perch, and she’s determined to shuck her brainy loner persona and start afresh with a new Brady Bunch name—Cindy. It’s the late 1970s, and fitting in becomes more difficult as Iran makes U.S. headlines with protests, revolution, and finally the taking of American hostages. Even puka shell necklaces, pool parties, and flying fish can't distract Cindy from the anti-Iran sentiments that creep way too close to home. An eloquent portrayal of a disappearing way of life of the Long Island fishermen whose voices--humorous, bitter and bewildered--are as clear as the threatened beauty of their once quiet shore.
THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER FROM THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF PEOPLE WE MEET ON VACATION! "Original, sparkling bright, and layered with feeling."--Sally Thorne, author of The Hating Game A romance writer who no longer believes in love and a literary writer stuck in a rut engage in a summer-long challenge that may just upend everything they believe about happily ever afters. Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes bestselling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast. They're polar opposites. In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they're living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer's block. Until, one hazy evening, one thing leads to another and they strike a deal designed to force them out of their creative ruts: Augustus will spend the summer writing something happy, and January will pen the next Great American Novel. She'll take him on field trips worthy of any rom-com montage, and he'll take her to interview surviving members of a backwoods death cult (obviously). Everyone will finish a book and no one will fall in love. Really.
Winner of the 2018 Louisiana Literary Award given by the Louisiana Library Association For centuries, outlanders have openly denigrated Louisiana's coastal wetlands residents and their stubborn refusal to abandon the region's fragile prairies tremblants despite repeated natural and, more recently, man-made disasters. Yet, the cumulative environmental knowledge these wetlands survivors have gained through painful experiences over the course of two centuries holds invaluable keys to the successful adaptation of modern coastal communities throughout the globe. As Hurricane Sandy recently demonstrated, coastal peoples everywhere face rising sea levels, disastrous coastal erosion, and, inevitably, difficult lifestyle choices. Along the Bayou State's coast the most insidious challenges are man-made. Since channelization of the Mississippi River in the wake of the 1927 flood, which diverted sediments and nutrients from the wetlands, coastal Louisiana has lost to erosion, subsidence, and rising sea levels a land mass roughly twice the size of Connecticut. State and national policymakers were unable to reverse this environmental catastrophe until Hurricane Katrina focused a harsh spotlight on the human consequences of eight decades of neglect. Yet, even today, the welfare of Louisiana's coastal plain residents remains, at best, an afterthought in state and national policy discussions. For coastal families, the Gulf water lapping at the doorstep makes this morass by no means a scholarly debate over abstract problems. Ain't There No More renders an easily read history filled with new insights and possibilities. Rare, previously unpublished images documenting a disappearing way of life accompany the narrative. The authors bring nearly a century of combined experience to distilling research and telling this story in a way invaluable to Louisianans, to policymakers, and to all those concerned with rising sea levels and seeking a long-term solution.
The title of this book "and eggs aint Poetry" is not based on personal or significant meaning. It was chosen because it is catchy and funny! Its title comes from a song bearing the words, "Grits aint groceries, and eggs aint poultry, and Mona Lisa was a man". Smile! Expressive or entertainment art, be it poetry, fictional novels, plays or whatever, is just that: entertainment. The ideas for such are ingenious of the individual writers imagination, experiences, perceptions, beliefs and/or emotions. When we focus on and understand the writers message and where the idea for his/her work stems, then the outcome of the reading will be more enjoyable, by flowing along and engulfing the words. Then we may be able to understand the mindset the writer was in when he or she first created the "work". My point being, no "real" right or wrong way to design this book (inside or out)was used, except through the Authors ingenuity. Everyone is genuine and distinctive, and should make their own footprints in life, setting standards and even barriers for themselves. Not letting others dictate their existence nor agenda!! But, write their own stories. Hope you enjoy the book, "and eggs aint Poetry". Be blessed.
