A study of the economic and political forces shaping agriculture and trade in the Pacific region. The book underscores the region's promise and importance for global agricultural markets at a time when the world's attention is fixed on Europe and the Soviet Union.
This book is concerned with the management of food production and the distribution of food in the Pacific Basin, exploring food's potential for engendering both increased conflict and cooperation in the region. The authors begin by discussing the role of food and agriculture in the international economy and the implications of two contrasting approaches to food security: international trade and self-sufficiency. They also consider the problem of international migration of labor in the region and look at how agriculture can contribute to the development of the economy in individual countries. The book concludes with a discussion of the prospects for international collaboration in dealing with the domestic and international adjustments required to enhance overall growth and equity in food supply and distribution.
The Asia-Pacific region is both a major consumer and producer of agricultural products. Its growth in both imports and exports is accelerating, but not to the potential. There is significant opportunity in this region to expand agro-trade especially due to population growth, dietary change of consumers and trade of high-value products. This publication examines a number of constraints that act as barriers to realizing the trade potential of the Asia-Pacific region: cumbersome trade procedures, inadequate compliance to product standards, poor trade logistics and lack of financing for agricultural trade. Some Asia-Pacific countries have adopted effective measures to deal with the problems presented. Still, many countries in this region lag behind in facilitating agricultural trade and will need to adopt similar measures.
