Excerpt from Advertising for Trade in Latin-America It is a real privilege to write introductory words about any work relating to Latin-America prepared by Dr. W. E. Aughinbaugh. There is, however, a special satisfaction in commending highly a book of his authorship on Latin-American advertising. In my twenty years close relationship to Latin-America, first as United States Minister and later as Director General of the Pan-American Union, I have always known of Dr. Aughinbaugh's intimate and authoritative acquaintance with almost every phase of Pan-American commercial relations. He has lived nearly twenty years, in Latin-American countries and visited all of them at different times. He has prepared in this period practical copy for all of the representative Latin-American newspapers and had charge of successfully spending large sums of money for advertising purposes through out the vast area and population south of the Rio Grande. As Foreign and Export Editor of the "New York Commercial," and as Professor of Foreign Trade at New York University and also Columbia University, he has also done notable work in promoting Pan-American trade. Speaking Spanish and Portuguese, he has obtained an intimate knowledge of business men and methods, from the standpoint of both Latin-America and the United States, which makes his advice invaluable. Excerpt from Trade-Mark Advertising as an Investment The experienced advertiser who reads the accompanying monograph on trade mark advertising will find in its arguments and conclusions merely the formulation of his own tacit knowledge. The greater part of the matter here presented has been used by the writer for some time past in the form of typewritten briefs in soliciting business from advertisers. That the argu ment has appealed to their judgment as sound seems to be proved by the fact that, when reinforced by demonstrations of the type of copy he advocates, it has been instrumental in securing-in the past eigh teen months - orders for and offers of new business from a number of the largest and most experienced national advertisers, amounting to over a million dollars. The theory here presented regarding trade-mark advertising is not dependent upon the use of any one medium, but is applicable in some measure to all medi ums. It is particularly applicable to those which reach the Whole family frequently, thus giving the invaluable element of con tagion by bringing the message to their common knowledge. Whatever medium may be used, however, the message is the thing - the message that gets across - it is not What the advertiser puts into his advertisement that counts, it's what the average reader takes out of it. Excerpt from The Business of Advertising This book is intended for all who wish to know what advertising is, and how it is done. It will be helpful to the young man engaged in some phase of advertising work, and particularly to the young man who wishes to know what advertising work is in order to determine whether he wants to undertake it or not. It is written also with the idea of helping the manufacturer whose product ought to be advertised. From it such a manu facturer can gain some idea of the various steps neces sary to bring his product to the notice of the consumer. If it only strengthens in his mind the impression that professional help is necessary, it will have served a very good purpose. The advertising agent who renders service to his client is a very important factor in the business world. Too many advertisers are ignorant of the nature and scope of that service. All that an agency has to sell is experience, the accumulated experience of dealing with many conditions and many problems. While not pri marily a book for advertisers, the mere description of an ideal agency must show them that such an agency is as necessary to successful advertising as coast survey charts to navigation, or as logarithms to an astronomer.
