Fall theme: Sovereignty of God Isaiah, Matthew, Hebrews, Revelation This fall, lessons in Adult Bible Studies follow the theme, "Sovereignty of God." Through the visionary images of the authors of Isaiah, Hebrews, and Revelation, we come to see more clearly the sovereign nature of God. The quarter begins with a study of Isaiah's rich images of God as the one who rules the whole universe. In the Letter to the Hebrews, we see how God comes to lead humankind in the person of Jesus. God’s Prophets Demand Justice This summer, lessons in ADULT BIBLE STUDIES follow the theme “God’s Prophets Demand Justice.” The student book writer is Sarah McGiverin. Fall Theme: God’s World and God's People Matthew | Luke | Romans | 2 Corinthians | Colossians | Nehemiah This fall, our lessons come from the Book of Genesis, the book of beginnings. Through its pages, God is revealed as the Creator, Sustainer, Judge, and Redeemer who brought all things into being. Our lessons survey God's creation of the universe, earth, and people. The writer for the student book is Jack Gilbert; the writer for the teacher book is Von Unruh. God Created the World The first three lessons in this unit concentrate on God's creating the universe, earth, and people and then declaring all things created good. Although God created and sustains all life, humankind is special to God and unique. Lesson Four explores how God established the institution of marriage and the process of reproduction in order to populate the earth. Lesson Five explains how humankind chose to do wrong and thus introduced sin into God's perfectly created world. God Destroys and Re-Creates The first two lessons in this unit present Noah and his family as righteous followers of God who help repopulate and restore the earth after the destruction caused by the great Flood. The last two lessons feature the biblical couples Abraham and Sarah and Isaac and Rebekah, who worked with God in the cycle of continuing creation. God Blesses and Re-Creates Regardless In the last unit, the first lesson explores how God blessed humble Isaac in enemy territory. The next three lessons consider how Jacob deceitfully obtained the blessing God had already destined for him, later established a right relationship with God, and finally was blessed by God to marry and produce children with the wife he loved and for whom he long labored. Winter theme: Toward a New Creation Luke | Psalms | Galatians This winter, lessons in Adult Bible Studies follow the theme, "Creation: A Divine Cycle." With the advent of the Savior by the power of the Holy Spirit, God set in motion the fulfillment of the divine plan of salvation. Through Luke's Gospel, several psalms, and the epistle to the Galatians, we explore God's ongoing actions in blessing and reconciling the whole creation. Lesson 1 explores how Mary, a virgin, received and joyfully accepted the announcement that she had been highly favored by God to give birth to God's Son. Lesson 2 looks at the affirmation of Elizabeth, Mary’s cousin, to her news. Lesson 3 focuses on John's mission as the forerunner of the Savior. The Christmas Day lesson deals with the birth of Jesus and the circumstances and events pursuant to it. Praise From and for God's Creation The five lessons in this unit employ five different psalms. Several psalms emphasize praise for God that emanates from creation itself. Others invite us to praise God for creation. The Birthing of a New Community This unit has four lessons from Galatians that show us how God's creative process can be seen through the birthing of a new faith community with Jesus Christ as its foundation. The lessons address the importance of spiritual freedom, cooperation, and righteous living in building and maintaining the community. Tests of Faith The quarter’s first four lessons deal with powerful faith, simple faith, struggling faith, and resurrection faith by examining biblical texts from Mark’s Gospel. Restorative Faith The first lesson in the second unit examines Luke’s account of the healing of the centurion’s servant, while the second lesson continues in Luke 7 with a focus on the woman who anointed Jesus’ feet with expensive perfume.
