The need for organizations to address diversity, equity, and inclusion can be related to a myriad of issues. From internal organizational affairs to matters found in recent current events, and the fragile racial climate across the United States, organizations are looking for substantive ways to solve their diversity problems. Diversity statements peaked in popularity after the Summer of 2019. Efforts to devise a diversity statement were noble, however, if the words in the statement misrepresented the lived experiences of stakeholders, adjustments need to be made. This study focuses on educators as they identify features of their diversity, equity, and inclusion development. The findings reveal how leaders can understand and support educators to initiate shifts and fully actualize a diversity mission.
Research has shown that having a diverse organization only improves and enhances businesses. Forbes and Time report that diversity is an $8 Billion a year investment. However, poorly implementing diversity programs have damaging effects on the organization and the very individuals these programs attempt to help. Poorly implemented programs can cause peers and subordinates to question decisions and lose faith in leadership. In addition, it can cause even the most confident individuals to doubt their own skillset and qualifications. Many organizations have turned to training to solve this complex issue. To date, the actualization of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in higher education is almost nonexistent, and so are Black women in leadership roles in higher education. In this study, the researcher will examine the phenomenon of Black women who work in higher education and how DEI affects them. The real issues lie within colleges and universities actually implementing DEI strategies that will value and provide opportunities for leadership growth within their institutions. The researcher used semi-structured questions to interview twelve Black women from various institutions across the United States. The findings of the study suggest that diversity, equity and inclusion efforts are unknown to the majority of the women interviewed and there are no support or mentoring programs in place to help develop them into successful leaders beyond the “Director” position. The study also reveals that there is also no allyship among women of color who are in leadership roles. This study is important because Black women can offer a different perspective, creativity and a fair level of accountability because of all that they have had to overcome in the workplace. This study will help further research in the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education and professional development of and for Black women who are seeking to advance their career in higher education.
