Higher education institutions in the United States and across the globe, are realizing the importance of enabling internal and external collaborative work, e.g., interdisciplinary research and community partnerships. In recent years, researchers have documented the benefits of organizational collaboration for research including greater efficiency, effectiveness, and enhanced research reputation. In addition, accreditors, foundations, business, and government agencies have been espousing the value of collaboration for knowledge creation and research and improved organizational functioning. As a result of both the external pressures and the known benefits, many forms of internal and external research collaborations have begun to emerge in higher education. At the heart of this change, academic libraries, who have long been models for collaborative work, are increasingly participating in the research process by providing a widening range of research services beyond traditional reference services. Innovative library services, in areas such as bibliometric analysis, research data management, and data repositories, are evolving in response to changes in education funding and policies. These funding and policy changes have also coincided with technological developments to create opportunities for academic librarians to find new roles within their institutions and the research community. There is a growing body of literature examining these changing academic library roles, but few volumes have concentrated on how the nature of collaborative work in libraries is helping to reshape institutional research practices. This volume, the second of two in the series Creating the 21st-Century Academic Library that deals with the topic of open access in academic libraries, focuses on the implementation of open access in academic libraries. Chapters on the legalities and practicalities of open access in academic libraries address the issues associated with copyright, licensing, and intellectual property and include support for courses that require open access distribution of student work. The topic of library services in support of open access is explored, including the library’s role in providing open educational resources, and as an ally and driver of their adoption, for example, by helping defray author fees that are required for open access articles. A detailed look at open access in the context of undergraduate research is provided and considers how librarians can engage undergraduates in conversations about open access. Chapters consider ways to engage undergraduate students in the use, understanding, evaluation, and creation of open access resources. Issues that are of concern to graduate students are also given some attention and central to these are the development of Electronic Thesis and Dissertation (ETD) programs. A chapter examines the library’s role in balancing greater access to graduate student work with the consequences of openness, such as concerns about book contracts and sales, plagiarism, and changes in scholarly research and production. The book concludes with issues surrounding open data and library services in critical data librarianship, including advocacy, preservation, and instruction. It is hoped that this volume, and the series in general, will be a valuable and exciting addition to the discussions and planning surrounding the future directions, services, and careers in the 21st-century academic library.
Properly allocated physical space has a huge impact on the success of an academic library (Spencer, 2017). However, creating more space in the library can be difficult for some institutions and this is why space assessment studies are a valuable tool when making decisions about space allocation. One group underrepresented at universities are graduate students. Although graduate students add value and contribute success to their universities through teaching and research (Golde, 2005), most library spaces and information commons are built around undergraduates (Gibbs, et al., 2012), possibly because their u201cmultiple roles that go well beyond being a mere studentu201d (Rempel et. al., 2011) make them a challenging group to serve in a comprehensive manner. Compounding this challenge, most student services research focuses on undergraduates. Libraries have attempted to meet the needs of graduate students by providing services and dedicated space, but further work needs to be done in order to meet graduate studentsu2019 diverse needs.This poster will present findings from a project to study use of a library room dedicated to graduate students at a large public land grant institution. The administrative assumption was that the room was being underused because the graduate studentsu2019 needs were not being met. To explore this assumption, the researchers employed unobtrusive observations and brief interviews. The researchers gathered valuable information on the how graduate students were using the room, how frequently, and any changes users would like to see to the room and graduate student services more generally. In order to serve graduate students, libraries must find ways to support them and this study shows that the study site university is making this group a priority.
