This volume contains the proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium on Mechanical Behavior and Micro-mechanics of Nanostructured Materials, held in Beijing on June 27-30, 2005. The proceedings consist of approximately 30 presentations. Nano-scale, micro-scale, theoretical, experimental and numerical aspects of the subjects are covered. A wide scope of research and progress are displayed. This is the first work in print on this particular subject.
Micro-and Nanomechanics, Volume 5 of the Proceedings of the 2016 SEM Annual Conference & Exposition on Experimental and Applied Mechanics, the fifth volume of ten from the Conference, brings together contributions to this important area of research and engineering. The collection presents early findings and case studies on a wide range of areas, including: MEMS: Materials & Interfaces Microscale & Microstructural Effects on Mechanical Behavior Novel Nano-scale Probes Nanoindentation & Beyond Nanomechanics Dynamic Micro/Nano Mechanics
This book combines the proceedings of Mechanical Behavior of Nanomaterials - Experiments and Modeling, and Plasticity in Confined Volumes - Modeling and Experiments. These two symposia brought together researchers to exchange ideas about the mechanical behavior of materials where size, be it microstructural or geometric, plays an important role. Firstly it focuses on understanding the mechanical behavior of nanostructured materials, such as nanoscale thin films, nanowires, nanotubes, and nanoparticles, as well as nanoporous, nanograined and nanotwinned materials. Such materials with submicron length scales are important building blocks for next-generation functional devices and materials systems. The second focus is on understanding how micron and submicron external and internal microstructural-length scales play a defining role in the strength and ductility of a material. Modern simulation methods have revealed a diverse range of atomic and mesoscale processes that can contribute to the emergent plasticity of such complex materials. Topics include: nanostructured materials; polymers and composites; simulations and modeling and microcompression and nanoindentation.
Amidst the rapid advancement of nano-technologies, the key role played by mechanics and mechanical characterization techniques cannot be overemphasized. Research on experimental, theoretical and computational mechanics enables the bridging of science and technology of all engineering materials and devices. We thus organized this symposium encompassing a broad spectrum of application areas and yet focusing on the mechanics and mechanical characterization at the nano- and micro-scales. The basic venue of the symposium is on a mixture of keynote addresses and short lectures given by top-notch researchers in the fields. This symposium has forged a synergistic interaction among materials scientists and solid technicians working toward the advancement of nano-technologies.
This volume, a continuation of the MEMS, NEMS, and molecular machines symposium of the 2002 MRS Fall Meeting, is devoted to the investigation of materials and device behavior at the micro-, nano-, and molecular scale as well as interdisciplinary work futhering the design and development of micro-, nano-, and molecular devices. New materials and fabrication techniques are introduced, and ongoing issues such as reliability, surface effects, processing and packaging, biocompatibility, and stability are discussed. Projects coupling micro-and nanoscale approaches to solve ongoing issues in the development of small-scale systems are featured. Topics include: nanotechnology; alternative fabrication techniques; micro- and nanofluidics; applied micro- and nanotechnology; mechanical properties; biotechnology and nanotechnology; alternative materials and metrology; and surface engineering and tribology.
Symposium SS, "Properties and Processes at the Nanoscale-Nanomechanics of Material Behavior," was held November 28-December 2 at the 2011 MRS Fall Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts. For two decades, the MRS meetings have had a significant presence in hosting symposia focused on nanomechanical behavior of materials. This symposium continued this strong tradition by focusing on both methods of testing and the resulting unique properties in small volumes of materials. Two main thrusts are evident from the field at this time: the use of small scale tests to examine a locally small structure or defect (i.e., something you cannot accomplish with a macroscopic test) and the use of nanomechanics to determine nm-scale mechanisms that control macroscopic mechanical behavior. This selection of papers from the symposium highlight the breadth of work presented at the symposium.
