Excerpt from A History of First Baptist Church: Centennial Celebration In our effort to prepare a short history of First Baptist Church of Gastonia we begin by looking back briefly at the roots from which this church sprang. But in doing so we are trying not to look so far back that we lose sight of our immediate predecessors in the faith. Therefore we are focusing our attention upon the activities and accomplishments of our Baptist forefathers right here in America. We begin by taking a quick look at a few of the early arrivals of Baptist in this country. We' do not know who the first Baptist was to set foot on American soil. But we' know from American history that many of these early immigrants came here to escape religious persecution in the old countries. Some of them were Baptists. Others became Baptists after coming to America. Among these early arrivals were such Baptist leaders as Roger Williams and John Clarke. Roger Williams was born in Wales in 1598. He received his education at the Universities of Oxford and of Cambridge. He was a Puritan and a Separatist. He spoke out openly against religious intolerance and persecution. For this he himself became a victim of persecution. To escape such persecution he fled to America in 1630. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from Centennial Monograph Celebrating the First 100 Years of the Baptist Church at Chapel Hill This is not a history. Dr. A. C. Howell several years age wrote a brief history of the church, treating the period from 1854 to 1924. He was the first to mine the old minutes. Brief sketches had been written as early as 185 8 but no one before had attempted to put together a story of the ensuing years. This is a Centennial Monograph. We have gathered together some interesting facts about persons and events connected with the first one hundred years of the life of the Baptist Church at Chapel Hill and we have documented them. We have collected some photographs which were about to disappear and some which would be difficult to procure later on. We have included a bio graphical sketch of the last six pastors of the church with a brief word about each one's ministry, compressed from a longer account which each man prepared himself. We have compiled a 100-year Statistical Table of the church and Sunday School and a 40-year Statistical Table of the wmu. We have appended a Centennial Roster of Members. Persons now living are too close to the past 30 years to write a history of them. The fuller papers from which we have worked, a collection of annual reports, volumes of church bulletins, min utes of committee meetings and other source material covering recent years will be deposited in the church archives. When the proper time arrives and the proper historian appears these will be available. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
