Excerpt from A Treatise on Electricity N the present book I have tried to meet the needs of those readers who require an advanced text covering both the theoretical and practical sides of: the subject, as far as this can conveniently be done in a single volume. Though complete in itself, the book is not intended for beginners, who may be supposed to have read one of the excellent elementary treatises available, such as Whetham's Theory of Experimental Electricity. Space saved from the detailed treatment of elementary topics has been used to give an account of some of the more recent developments of electricity. It thus comes about that the book falls naturally into two sections; the first eight chapters having been kept fairly simple and containing all the principles necessary for a right appreciation of the subject, while the remaining chapters form introductory accounts of special subjects, which may be consulted by students before starting on treatises devoted to them alone. Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Electricity The third chapter, on electric work and energy, ' consists of deductions from these facts. To those who have some acquain tance with the elementary parts of mathematics, this chapter may be useful as tending to make their knowledge more precise. Those who are not so prepared may omit this chapter in their first reading of the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism, Vol. 1 In describing the phenomena, I shall select those which most clearly illustrate the fundamental ideas of the theory, omitting others, or reserving them till the reader is more advanced. The most important aspect of any phenomenon from a mathematical point of view is that of a measurable quantity. I shall therefore consider electrical pheno mena chiefly with a view to their measurement, de scribing the methods of measurement, and defining the standards on which they depend. In the application of mathematics to the calculation of electrical quantities, I shall endeavour in the first place to deduce the most general conclusions from the data at our disposal, and in the next place to apply the results to the simplest cases that can be chosen. I shall avoid, as much as I can, those questions which, though they have elicited the skill of mathematicians, have not enlarged our knowledge of science. Excerpt from Elementary Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism The endeavour to carry out this idea implied the keeping in view from the beginning of the dual character of electrification and the emphasising of the essential part played in the most familiar electrical phenomena by the dielectric medium in which they occur. This led to the early introduction of the idea of lines and tubes of force, and involved the rewriting of several chapters or parts of chapters.
