The acoustic and vibration characteristics of vehicles remain vitally important factors to market success. Failure to meet customer expectations can seriously affect sales and ultimately company survival. Achieving appropriate quality and affordable costs is the engineering task that this volume addresses.
In this thesis, pressure distribution and noise and vibration analyses of a drum brake were carried out using finite element analysis to investigate the noise propensity of an 5-cam commercial vehicle drum brake. The natural vibration modes and frequencies of the brake components and brake assembly, with the brake drum and shoe & lining assembly coupled, have been studied using the finite element modal analysis provided by the ABAQUS Version 4.9 package. The modes responsible for the brake noise, correlation between the natural vibration modes of the brake components and the modes involved in the brake noise, the noise generation mechanism involved, and noise propensities with several parameters were investigated. A 2-D brake assembly model was used in the pressure distribution analysis, which took into account the flexibility of the brake drum, shoe, and lining. In the noise and vibration analysis, full 3-D finite element models of the brake components and brake assembly were used. The effect of friction interface pressure distribution was taken into account by a novel method based on variable coupling stiffness between the brake drum and shoe & lining assembly in the coupled brake model. Results have been correlated with other published work, with experimental data, and with field experience.
Vehicle Tribology was chosen as the topic for the 17th Leeds-Lyon Symposium, as it was decided to be a timely opportunity to bring together experts of many disciplines connected with problems of emissions, particulates and energy efficiency associated with the automobile engine. The volume contains 55 papers divided into eighteen sessions.

Additional chapters on friction drives and fluid clutches and retarders An extended discussion on cone brakes and clutches A simpler formulation of the torque from a centrifugal clutch Updated sections on automatic braking systems An analysis of variable-speed friction drives with clutch capability Analytical and computer-assisted design techniques
The book analyzes the basic problems of oscillation processes and theoretical aspects of noise and vibration in friction systems. It presents generalized information available in literature data and results of the authors in vibroacoustics of friction joints, including car brakes and transmissions. The authors consider the main approaches to abatement of noise and vibration in non-stationary friction processes. Special attention is paid to materials science aspects, in particular to advanced composite materials used to improve the vibroacoustic characteristics of tribopairs The book is intended for researchers and technicians, students and post-graduates specializing in mechanical engineering, maintenance of machines and transport means, production certification, problems of friction and vibroacoustics.
This conference is intended to offer a forum for those involved either in research or in application of laser instruments for motion, velocity and vibration measurements on solids. The purpose is to extend the knowledge and the use of such techniques and to encourage the development of new systems for laboratory use, for field testing, or for industrial application
