This volume considers Karl Barth's first major publication, his commentary on the apostle Paul's epistle to the Romans in its two editions (1919 and 1922), analyzing both its contents, its exegetical and theological method, and its relevance today. The volume includes essays by specialists of Barth's thought as well as by prominent contemporary thinkers who, sometimes for the first time, publicly assess Barth's contribution. The book is divided into seven parts, addressing in turn Barth as scriptural theologian (I), hermeneutics and metaphysics (II), the historical context (III), the first edition of the commentary (IV), faith and resurrection (V), ethics and politics (VI), and, finally, religion, liturgy and theology (VII). One century after the publication of this classic work of 20th century theology, can and should Barth's early thought still provoke us to thinking anew about God's revelation, human existence, and the world in which we live? Each reader is invited to a personal, informed answer.
