In 1966, a bacteriological survey of the western shoreline of Campobello Island, New Brunswick, led to a closure of the water on Deep Cove. Between May 5 and June 2, 1976, a bacteriological and a physical sanitary investigation was conducted of the shellfish area of Deep Cove to reassess the closure. A total of 343 water samples were collected from the surrounding areas, and were tested for the presence of fecal coliform bacteria.
As part of a continuing assessment of shoreline water sectors, the Mobile Laboratory Services of Public Health Engineering Division Moncton, N.B. carried out a physical sanitary and bacteriological survey of Gold River and Western Shore sector of shellfish area #13 during the month of October 1971. The ribbon like presence of homes along the 2 miles of highway that follows the shoreline, through the communities of Gold River (pop. 300) and Western Shore (pop. 500), warranted a survey of the area to determine the density of coliform pollution in the surrounding sea water.
