In A Rough Ride to the Future, James Lovelock - the great scientific visionary of our age - presents a radical vision of humanity's future as the thinking brain of our Earth-system James Lovelock, who has been hailed as 'the man who conceived the first wholly new way of looking at life on earth since Charles Darwin' (Independent) and 'the most profound scientific thinker of our time' (Literary Review) continues, in his 95th year, to be the great scientific visionary of our age. This book introduces two new Lovelockian ideas. The first is that three hundred years ago, when Thomas Newcomen invented the steam engine, he was unknowingly beginning what Lovelock calls 'accelerated evolution', a process which is bringing about change on our planet roughly a million times faster than Darwinian evolution. The second is that as part of this process, humanity has the capacity to become the intelligent part of Gaia, the self-regulating Earth system whose discovery Lovelock first announced nearly 50 years ago. In addition, Lovelock gives his reflections on how scientific advances are made, and his own remarkable life as a lone scientist. The contribution of human beings to our planet is, Lovelock contends, similar to that of the early photosynthesisers around 3.4 billion years ago, which made the Earth's atmosphere what it was until very recently. By our domination and our invention, we are now changing the atmosphere again. There is little that can be done about this, but instead of feeling guilty about it we should recognise what is happening, prepare for change, and ensure that we survive as a species so we can contribute to - perhaps even guide - the next evolution of Gaia. The road will be rough, but if we are smart enough life will continue on Earth in some form far into the future. Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1974, JAMES LOVELOCK is the author of more than 200 scientific papers and the originator of the Gaia Hypothesis (now Gaia Theory). His many books on the subject include Gaia: A New Look at Life on Earth (1979), The Revenge of Gaia (2006), and The Vanishing Face of Gaia (2009). In 2003 he was made a Companion of Honour by Her Majesty the Queen, in 2005 Prospect magazine named him one of the world's top 100 public intellectuals, and in 2006 he received the Wollaston Medal, the highest Award of the UK Geological Society.
A fun, dynamic introduction to the early letter sounds children encounter when they begin school. E, U and R sail their way across the colourful pages of this book in suitably pirate fashion to engage young children in what may be their first reading experience. With an entertaining story for the adult to read, simple words for children to attempt and further activities at the end of the book to enforce everything that has been learnt, these books are the perfect first introduction to phonics.
He may be little known today, but Ben Daniels was a feared gunman who typified the journeyman gunfighter every bit as much as those whose names have become legend. Yet his story has eluded researchers and yarn-spinners alike--until now. Two prominent western historians have teamed up to tell the story of Ben Daniels's rise from outlaw and convict to presidential protégé and high-ranking officer of the law. Tracing his life from jailhouse to White House, from Dodge City to San Juan Hill, Robert DeArment and Jack DeMattos present a full-length biography of Daniels, the most controversial of Teddy Roosevelt's "White House Gunfighters." The book faithfully traces Daniels's early years, the time he spent in the Wyoming Territorial Penitentiary, his rebirth as a Dodge City lawman--including the controversy over his shooting a man in the back--and his part in the Battle of Cimarron. Following military service with the Rough Riders in the Spanish-American War, Daniels was appointed by President Roosevelt as U.S. marshal for turbulent Arizona Territory. Daniels was as quick with his mind as with a gun, but he had a rough ride to redemption. This original biography belongs on the shelf of every gunfighter buff and anyone interested in the broader story of the Old West. It rescues Daniels from the footnotes of history and shows us the amazing life of one of the West's most intriguing gunmen.

In A Rough Ride, Paul Kimmage gives a devastatingly frank account of what life is really like in the world of professional cycling. In tracing his mixed fortunes, Kimmage describes not only the grueling pressures of the sport but also the seamier side: the widespread use of drugs to enhance performance. A Rough Ride breaks the law of silence to expose a world where the supposed glamour has worn very thin.
Five of Hugh Neems' uncles served their country in the First World War. In the stinking mud of the trenches, on horseback, on a Douglas motorcycle and in RAF aircraft, they each played their part, suffering injury and ultimately, death. This fascinating and beautifully written account of their war combines the bigger picture with snatches of personal experience, offering a soldier's-eye view of events and trying to make sense of what it was like to battle for days and weeks to gain just a few yards of desolate ground.
Amber: Two years ago I would’ve made a play for a guy like Bam in a heartbeat. But that was before my father died in a puddle of blood in the middle of a parking lot. Before his d*mn club ripped a hole in my heart that could never be filled. Before I hated everything to do with the True Brothers and their “business.” Before I hated bikers. But I still need answers about what happened to my dad, which is why I’m poking around at a nightclub owned by the Russian mafia. And that’s where I run into Bam, who carries me out of the club in his stupid strong arms like I’m True Brothers property. Bam: The last person I expected to see at Howl that night was motorcycle club princess, Amber Bennett. And I sure as hell wasn’t thrilled to see who she was with—the psychotic heir of the Volkskaya Bratva. I get that she wants to know what went on with her dad, but it’s club business and she’s in way over her head. Only when I take her home and see the hell she’s living in, I can’t stay quiet. Now it’s my duty to step in and protect her, and she’s the definition of off-limits. If only she weren’t so hot. And determined to take care of everything herself. And sweetly vulnerable. Because when we cross the line, I’m forced to choose between my True Brothers—or my true feelings. *** "It’s easy to cheer for these tough characters and their tender hearts.” –Publisher’s Weekly “This. Book. Is. So. Damn. Good. It’s an epic-badass-biker-who-melts-your-heart-kind of five star read.” –Up All Night with Books Blog “…once they admit their feelings, these two are #relationshipgoals! Holy moly! What Bam was willing to give up for her? Swoon!” –Samantha, The Romance Book Disciple
