Riverfront Renaissance details Richmond's riverfront development, beginning in 1985 with the construction of the floodwall, followed by the actual restoration of the old canal system, the developĀ¬ment of its accompanying Canal Walk and History Interpretation, the creation of the Civil War Visitor Center and the Richmond segment of the Capital Trail. It celebrates the economic development that these programs have engendered. A major purpose of this document is to record the details of the operation of a unique public/pri-vate enterprise that facilitates these programs. With city, state, federal and private support, this enterprise raised $50 million for infrastructure improvements on the riverfront over a period of 20 years. Further, the book's objective is to memorialize the creative elements of this joint venture and to recognize the dedicated efforts of a wide swath of citizens and public employees who were involved. These individuals labored for part or all of 25 years to bring this project to fruition and made this display of close working relations between public and business folk so productive and so beneficial.

The essays in this collection explore conflict and continuity across the spectrum of political, legal, and spiritual traditions from late medieval Umbria and Tuscany to sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Venice, Rome, and Castile. They point to a shared tradition of dispute and resolution in both ecclesiastical/spiritual and state/secular matters, whether of private conscience or public policy. Continuity of ideals, problems, and modes of resolution suggest that breaks in legal, political, or religious ideals and behavior were not as frequent or sharp as historians have argued. These continuities emerge from common methodological approaches grounded in close, careful reading of key texts and their polyvalent terms. Whether those were the terms of civil or canon law, spirituality, or astrology, each author has had to grapple with multiple possibilities, contexts, customs, and practices that reveal the shifts and continuities in their possible meanings. -- Amazon.com.
