Excerpt from A Queen of Tears, Caroline Matilda, Queen of Denmark and Norway and Princess of Great Britain and Ireland, Vol. 1 of 2 A word Of explanation is perhaps necessary for the first few chapters Of this book. In all the bio graphies Of Caroline Matilda written in any language, her life in England before her marriage has received scant consideration, probably on account Of her ex treme youth. As her parentage and education were largely responsible for the mistakes Of her later years, I have sketched, with some detail, the characters Of her father and mother, and her early environment. This plan has enabled me to describe briefly the English court from the death Of Queen Caroline to the accession Of George III., and so to form a link with my other books on the House Of Hanover. Excerpt from Life and Times of Her Majesty Caroline Matilda, Vol. 2 of 3: Queen of Denmark and Norway, and Sister of H. M. George III. Of England Perhaps you may wonder to receive a letter Without a name on a matter of so great importance from a friend who formerly used to tell you the truth before your face: but the times we live in now will not jus tify a man in exposing himself to danger, without seeing any good arising from it. The two last court days I sought for an opportunity at Hirschholm to Speak a few words to you in private, but I found it was impossible. You might have Ob served that if you had been at all attentive: but I found you SO much engaged with another Object that I could not approach near enough to you to make you under stand what I wanted, and I thought it inadvisable to go to Hirschholm on purpose to pay you a Visit. Excerpt from Life and Times of Her Majesty Caroline Matilda, Vol. 3 of 3: Queen of Denmark and Norway, and Sister of H. M. George III of England, From Family Documents and Private State Archives The attendance of the valets was for this purpose shortened. On the other hand, the king was to re ceive every morning the visit of a doctor, who gave him powders, although there was nothing the matter with his Majesty, and, as valet Torp stated, lit. F., p. 52, his Majesty was just as healthy as he had been before, and demanded no attendance from a doctor. Excerpt from An Injured Queen, Caroline of Brunswick, Vol. 1 N days that were earlier it was essential that a heroine should approach very closely to perfection. If she did not have all the accomplishments, at least she had all the virtues. She was beautiful, tender hearted, trustful, true, forgiving, ready to lay down her life for her husband, however unworthy he might have shown himself. A single Spot, and she could not be a heroine at most, then, she might be the friend of the heroine over whom the paragon wept and prayed as she knelt by the side of her little white dimity cot. Happily since those times we have gone far, and have advanced more than one step to Nature now a woman may have every vice but one and still be a heroine, her one virtue entitling her to have her name emblazoned on the roll of honour. "My aim in it has been to convey a juster and less prejudiced notion than prevails at present respecting the Danish and Norwegian conquests." -Jens Jacob Asmussen Worsaae, An Account of the Danes and the Norwegians (1852) An Account of the Danes and the Norwegians in England, Scotland and Ireland (1852) by Jens Warsaae, was based on his research into the Scandinavian invasions of the European mainland. During the 10th century, the European mainland was invaded by Norse settlers from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, who intermarried with native tribes and came to be known as "Normans." While their influence on the history of France was significant, it was even stronger in England, which the Normans conquered in the 11th century. Warsaae's book, commissioned by the Royal Society of Northern Antiquaries, was his attempt to revise the impressions that the 19th century British had of the effects of the Norman conquests on England.
