Excerpt from Greek Literature Life.-but the Greek books are not merely interesting as showing the methods and aims of early thinkers. They contain results, too, which have had the deepest and widest influence on the whole of modern life, in religion, in morality, in science, in politics, in litera ture. The thoughts of the great Greek thinkers have been bearing fruit in the world ever since they were first uttered. In some special sciences, the work done by the Greeks remains a basis of study to this day, as in Ethics and in Logic and in Geometry. It is in Greek historians and Greek orators that we read some of the political lessons most directly useful for our own time. Excerpt from A Greek Primer The sentences to be rendered into Greek are cut down to the mini mum. The editor has found it a valuable practice with beginners in Greek and Latin to require the English of the translation exercises in the daily review lesson to be written in blank books, to be retranslated into Greek or Latin as a composition exercise. He believes that the careful study and memorizing of Greek sentences to be turned again into Greek, correctly written and accented, is a more helpful and much less discouraging process than the translation of English into original Greek, -at least in the early stages and with young pupils. The english-greek sentences may well be taken up, together with the short selections for reading, In a general or monthly review. In these days of horseless carriages and Wireless telegraphy the learner may be led to expect a workless Greek book; but that blessing, alas, is not yet in sight. To attain the little knowledge requisite to carry on the study of Greek in school or college, careful attention, common sense, and some study are necessary. It is hoped, however, that the present Primer shall clear the way of a few difficulties, and if it does not create an interest in the subject, that it shall at least remove some of the fears which beset the student's way. The Primer is designed to occupy a half year, or, at the most. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A History of Classical Greek Literature, Vol. 1 of 2: Part 1. The Poets But throughout the various shorter episodes of which the Iliad may be composed, there is such a harmony in the drawing of the various heroes who appear on the scene, that (0) even if one great master did not sketch them all, there must have been recognised types, which had long since as sumed a definite and fixed shape for a school or series of poets, each of whom was able to express this type with ade quate consistency. Excerpt from An Abridged History of Greek Literature The same idea of the nature of history has led us, in our account of the literary activity of Greece, to devote some space to Christian writers. Hellenism, in fact, existed side by side with Christianity for three centuries before disappearing to make room for the new religion. Hence the gradual modification which is an integral part of its history. One can understand neither the last pagan nor the first Christian writers if one separates arbitrarily the two currents that ran so long beside each other and eventually merged.
