Excerpt from A Preliminary Study of the Pueblo of Taos New Mexico: A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculties of the Graduate, Schools of Arts, Literature, and Science, in Candidacy, for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Department of Anthropology This brief account of the Pueblo of Taos is the result mainly of a three-months visit at the Pueblo in the summer of 1896. Now that a few friends have been made there, it is hoped that at a later time a more complete and thorough study may be made. The repeated references to the Papers of the Archceological Institute of America show how much I am indebted to the writings of Mr. A. F.Bandelier. In spelling the few native names which occur in this study and which I have not seen mentioned before, I have followed the alphabet given in Powell's Introduction to the Study of Indian Languages.
