Excerpt from A Philological Grammar: Grounded Upon English, and Formed From a Comparison of More Than Sixty Languages, Being an Introduction to the Science of Grammar, and a Help to Grammars of All Languages, Especially English, Latin, and Greek Worthy Reader, There are three sciences which are of great service for the strengthening of the mind and the sharpening of the wit, and for the helping of the understanding in its search after truth, - Geometry, Logic, and Grammar; but if we would make Grammar truly worthy of its two fellow-sciences, we must seek to conform it to the universal or to some common laws of speech, so as to make it the science of the language of mankind, rather than the Grammar of one tongue. A knowledge of the forms which have grown out of common laws, working with peculiar elements in one tongue, cannot be fairly taken for the Science of Grammar, any more than a knowledge of the organs of one plant, when some even of them are misformed from accidental causes, is the science of botany.
