Excerpt from A New Abridgment of the Law, Vol. 1 of 7 In the course of the work, Mr. Bacon seems to have made different use of the materials that lay before him, sometimes taking the tracts at length, sometimes giving only extracts from them: but whether he inserted the whole of any tract, or only a part of it, we have reason to think, he inserted it just as he found it. If the Author in different treatises, in order to make each treatise perfect within itself, introduced the same matter conveyed in the same expression, the Compiler implicitly copied it, and under different titles of his work introduced the same passages to the extent of several pages. If the manuscripts were in any part defective, if the subjects were but partially treated of in them, the titles which related to those subjects were left equally defective in the Abridgment. The Compiler seemed to have as little inclination to supply the deficiencies of his Author, as he had fagacity to mark or correct his errors. Excerpt from A General Abridgment and Digest of American Law, Vol. 2 of 8: With Occasional Notes and Comments Sec-r. 1. General Principles. Our guardians in the United States are, l. Excerpt from An Abridgment of the American Law of Real Property, Vol. 1 of 2 And for the innumerable modifications with which, in the various states, they qualify those principles, they are still more indispensable. The present work proceeds upon the plan of collecting the flmen'can cases, not in the way of merely stating the points decided or copying the marginal notes, but by summarily giving the facts, and often an ah stract of the Opinion of the Court, either in its own language or otherwise. It is behaved without any accurate enume ration, however that two thirds of the cases cited in this work are American cases while at the same time few or none of the English decisions are omitted. Excerpt from The American Law of Real Property, Vol. 1 of 2 The following work is designed to be for the American lawyer, what Cruise's Digest hitherto has been for him, and still continues to be for the English lawyer. Cruise, although undoubtedly one of the best elementary law books that England has produced, and although heretofore an indispensable part of the library of an American practitioner, has been extensively used in this country, not because it is the book which is wanted, but because it is the only one, in any degree answering the purpose, which could be bad. It is believed that the present work is the first attempt to compile a book, upon the important subject of Real Property, corresponding in extent and general plan with the English text-book, and, at the same time, thoroughly American in the materials of which it is composed. It may be statedrin few words, what are the chief characteristics which distinguish this work as strictly American, from the popular Abridgment above referred to. Excerpt from Criminal Law, Vol. 1: Instruction Paper If the party defrauded is also guilty of a violation of the law, he, too, should be prosecuted, rather than his offense should serve as a shield to the other's crime. The offense is committed against the public, and not against the individual. The guilty party is prosecuted in the interest of the people of the state, and not in the interest of the party defrauded of his property. There is no principle of law that will bar the state from prosecuting a criminal because some other person is a particeps criminis.
