In Subud the Coming New Age of Reality, author Simon Monbaron, a self-proclaimed Subud "zealot", shares the knowledge, wisdom and experience he has gained from forty years of receiving the spiritual training known as the "latihan kejiwaan" of Subud. This massive (594 pages) tome is not just for Subud members, but for anyone who seeks the reality that lies beyond the material world. At last, here is a book I can give to friends and family members who are curious about what I do when I go off to receive the latihan, but are not yet ready to jump into the deep end to find out for themselves! For the merely curious, Monbaron's book recounts the history of Subud, and how it grew from a small group in Indonesia to a world-wide spiritual phenomenon. It tells the story of Muhammad Subuh Sumohadiwidjojo, an unremarkable government clerk whose life changed when a ball of light entered the top of his head when he was out for an evening stroll. And it discusses many aspects of the latihan, which is the central core of Subud. For those who are considering joining Subud, the Monbaron's book provides information regarding what this involves, as well as a detailed description of the Subud organization. Readers may also skip around and find out what Bapak had to say about topics as varied as suicide, feminism, reincarnation, sex, drug use, and many other questions and issues with which people struggle. Whether you use it as a reference manual, a source of fascinating anecdotes and spiritual insights, or a way to learn about a spiritual path of profound power and simplicity, Subud the Coming New Age of Reality is a treasure chest of immense value.
A memoir of mythological proportions, this honest and straightforward autobiography shares the remarkable spiritual and religious journey of a young man in Tokyo.
Beyond the Breakers is an entirely engaging account of the spiritual journey to date of the author. It is a story of how one's everyday life can be directed by a higher power, affecting all aspects such as one's work, marriage, and residence. Subud members as well as those interested in the development of the inner self will be inspired by this book. Beyond the Breakers is an eloquent witness to the power of the latihan, to the power that brings about an inner transformation; to a belief in a Higher Will that comes not from a Teaching or a Creed, but from a personal experience of the Great Life Force.
'People have given themselves over to the worship of material things, and they have lost the will and power to worship God. God has always sent messengers to show the way out of such situations, and He has again done so in our present age. A messenger is already on earth and his identity known to many. The messenger will come to your country and even to your house.' This prophecy was made to John Bennett, a leading British scientist and teacher of Gurdjieff's system of Work, by Moslem Sheikh, Abdullah Dagestani, when Bennett was in Damascus in 1954. This book is one man's description of the extraordinary events that occurred when this prophecy was fulfilled some three years later, and Bapak Muhammad Subuh, the founder of the spiritual path of Susila Budhi Dharma (Subud) came to Coombe Springs, Bennett's Gurdjieff Centre near London. The author goes on to trace his life in the UK, USA, Australia and Indonesia, where he and his wife lived for 27 years in Bapak Subuh's compound south of Jakarta.
Over the years many Subud members would ask me to write a book about my spiritual experiences in Subud. I would usually say that I would someday write one. But I never felt moved to do so by the power of God. I have always felt that if it was in accordance with God's will, that I would be moved to do it. Well finally one day, without thinking about it, I felt moved to start writing this book. To my surprise, it was January 31, 2011. This was the day that I experienced my official opening in Subud, forty-six years ago. Although I first received the spiritual exercise of Subud about six or seven months before my official opening when I had never even heard about Subud. I give my praise and thanks to the One Almighty God, to whom I owe everything. My feeling is that this book is especially for the young Subud members. My hope is that they will be given the enthusiasm to continue receiving the spiritual exercise of Subud and not get bored. I pray that God will give them the patience that is required to continue and the faith in God that is necessary for their well being and spiritual development. May God give them the understanding to wait until they are moved by the power of God and not use their own will when receiving the spiritual exercise of Subud.
