Excerpt from A Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis An examination of most of the works on the subject of qualitative analysis will show that they belong in one of two general classes which may be described as follows: first, the exhaustive treatise, of which such a work as that of Fresenius will serve as an example; second, the abbreviated treatise, often very much abbreviated, in which the author attempts to cover the whole work in a few lessons. For graduate students, or for the better class of beginners who are able to devote the most of their time to the study, books of the first class may be invaluable. But the great majority of the students in our colleges do not become chemists. They study analytical chemistry at the most but a short time, and what they acquire is, and should be, to a considerable extent, of disciplinary value to them. To the great majority of our students, therefore, the exhaustive treatise, especially at the beginning of their course, is a means of confusion rather than an intelligent guide. The second class of text-books is also likely to fail with the average student, since it teaches him to analyze an unknown substance in such a purely mechanical way that the actual knowledge of the subject acquired is small, and the disciplinary value of the work becomes a minimum. Excerpt from A Compendious Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis It is scarcely necessary to say that this little work is a compila tion from well-known authorities, among which may be particularly mentioned the works of Galloway, Will, Fresenius, and Northcote Church. Excerpt from The Compendious Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis Only the more important chemical elements are em braced in the systematic course of this manual. Means of detecting a few less common elements are incidentally given. Those of the elements which are so rare as to be at present of little interest, except to the professional chemist or mineralogist, are not alluded to. Excerpt from Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis Notwithstanding the rapid multiplication of Treatises on Qualitative Chemical Analysis, the Manual of Fresenius main tains a well deserved popularity. Though apparently somewhat complicated in its arrangement, it is in use incomparably the most trustworthy guide the chemist can employ. Excerpt from A Manual of Chemical Analysis: Qualitative and Quantitative The consequence of this method is the stereotyped product so painfully familiar to all who are engaged in teaching or examining, namely, a certain number of regulation tests, arranged with a semblance of method in the everlasting three columns, headed Experiment, Observation, Inference, followed by a more or less slovenly copy of the time-honoured tables. The valuelessness of such a written-out record must be patent to all teachers, and yet we still continue to accept it in lieu of a few real notes, less quickly and easily examined no doubt, because less stereotyped, but of infinitely more value to the student himself. Excerpt from Elements of Qualitative and Quantitative Chemical Analysis An examination of this Table Shows at once that all normal nitrates and acetates, and all the salts of the alkaline metals (potassium, sodium) are soluble. Other similar general conclu sions can 'be deduced by the student himself, which, once familiarly learned, will be very useful in working out equations. Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis for Students of Pharmacy Qualitative analysis is of use to the pharmacist in testing chemicals for identity and purity. The study of the subject is also Of value because Of the practical knowledge of chemicals and chemical processes acquired by the student, and because it gives training in careful observation and develops the reasoning powers as they are exercised in the interpretation of results. This Manual was prepared as a guide for the author's own classes, and the objects sought are to acquaint the student with the general methods Of qualitative analysis and to prepare him to carry out such qualitative tests as the pharmacist may be called upon to make. The course is arranged to include one hour of lecture, one hour of recitation and about three hours of laboratory work per week for one school year. Practice on the analysis of unknown solutions is provided for throughout the course. This is important, as it not only increases the interest of the student in the work but also develops his self-reliance by constantly putting him upon his own responsibility in doing his work and in interpreting his results. The introductory section on the theory Of chemistry may be omitted if it is not necessary for the class to study or review this part of the subject. The Manual is in no sense a reference book, and in general only those things are included that are needed as a guide for the labora tory work, or which may easily be learned in connection with this work. A standard reference book on qualitative analysis will be Of great service while taking the course, and such a reference book is indispensable for anyone who is to pursue the-subject further. Excerpt from An Elementary Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis Of the fluid, bu sometimes it passes off in the form of a gas, as ammonia, etc. Precipitation is often accelerated by heating the fluid, or by agitation. The precipitate is separated from the fluid by filtration. A disk of unsized paper is folded into a conical form, and placed in a funnel supported on a stand. The paper is first moistened with a little distilled water, and the mix ture poured upon it the clear fluid passes into the ves sel set below, while the precipitate remains on the paper. To free the precipitate from all soluble impurities, it is washed by pouring distilled water over it, until a drop from the point of the funnel leaves no residue upon pla tinum foil. Excerpt from Qualitative Chemical Analysis: A Guide in the Practical Study of Chemistry and in the Work The first edition of this work appeared in 1878, the second revised edition in 1876, and the third in 1880. With the first edition were incorporated the Tables for Qualitative Analysis by Professor Silas H. Douglas, editions of which had appeared in 1864, 1865, and 1868. Professor Douglas having some years since retired from engagements in chemistry, and being by his' long and most valuable services in chemical education well entitled to release, now withdraws his name from the authorship of this work.
