This is the autobiography of Sir Wilfred Grenfell, who came to Labrador as a missionary doctor and decided to stay there, becoming a great benefactor of the place and her people. In the book, Grenfell describes the way of life in Labrador, many of his experiences there as a doctor and a champion of both children and education, and the different people who had given funds, time, and effort to improve life in Labrador and northern Newfoundland. Woven into his story is the underlying theme of how so much good can come from volunteering, not only for those receiving the help, but also for those who give it. This was typical of Grenfell, who never tired of using whatever means at his disposal to make life better for the people of Labrador.
