Excerpt from A History of Nova Scotia, or Acadie, Vol. 1 In the review of the people who inhabited Nova Scotia at successive dates, the Micmacs, the French, and the English, I have seen many shining and noble qualities displayed in each successive age, both by leaders and followers. Some faults they had - isome crimes were committed but we, whosucceed them, may be happy if we can shew the courage, the endurance and generosity that are the attributes of the early adventurers and settlers of Acadie. Some periods of our history afford but little matter for connected narrative. At other times interesting transactions occur which do not form part of the regular sequence of events. In such cases I have preferred to place them in appendices to the chapters, instead of omitting them entirely, as I am anxious to preserve every thing of genuine interest that I have found in my enquiries. The leading idea with me has been to preserve from oblivion the past occurrences in this province. The frequent change of masters - the misfortunes that have often retarded its progress to civilization, and the varying effects that the contests of two great and noble nations have had on its des tiny, will hereafter give scope for philosophical minds to review, and for eloquent writers to expatiate on. Excerpt from A History of Nova Scotia, Vol. 3: Or Acadie Having traced the progress of Acadie from its-first incep tion as a French colony in 1605, to its conquest by Nicholson in 1 710, -thence to the British settlement at Chebucto in i 749, and marked the establishment of representative government in I758, -having watched it through-the phases of the old French war, the exile of the Acadians, the revolution in the older English province'son the.continent, and their' uprising into a nation and an empire, -having. Seen the. Immigration from New England in 1760 upon' the vacant la'nds; originally occupied by the French on the bay of Fundy a'nd basin of Mines, -the advent also of the loyalists in the founding of the governments of New Brunswick, Cape Breton and Prince Edward island - having seen the progress made by this country during the wars of Napoleon and thesecond American war, gradually but certainly advancing. In the march of intellect and industry, with occasional additions to its papulation from the Britishisles - having, noticed the large sums of money given byparliament to aid our'endeavors, and the extensive military and naval protection constantly afi'orded us - under all these transactions there is a broad and deep foundation of gratitude laid that we cannot keep.out of'view, due onour part to the latest generation to the monarchs and parliaments of Great Britain for unlimited and unstinted favor' and'support. The ties-which in ordinary cases bind a people to the nation from which theyoriginate, are, in our case. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This is the first of a three-volume series that discusses, in great depth, the history of Nova Scotia, including its history as Acadie, the first visit of Frenchman DeMonts, the province's early fishing and trading economy and much more. This volume discusses the province's earliest history and continues through the year 1739 when there was significant friction between the French and English inhabitants of the region.

Excerpt from Nova Scotia Illustrated, Vol. 1: November 1895 Even before the declaration of the war which was to begin in disaster and end in permanent conquest, the English ministry had formed the plan of assail ing the French in America on all sides at once, and of repelling them, by a bold and concerted action, from all their encroachments.
