Excerpt from A Handbook of English Politics for the Last Half-Century: Being an Outline of English Political History; Chronologically Arranged With Full Lists of Ministries, Notes, Etc Histories, Biographies, Social and Political Writings about our own ime. Anything which may help people, especially among our more busy classes, to arrange in order the many scraps of historical and political information they pick up, and to get a tolerably clear idea of their setting, may be of some use. An accurate and a true knowledge of the undisputed facts of political history in the past may often do much to modify men's attitude towards many passing events, which are too often judged either adversely or favourably from a purely party point of view. The greater part of this book has appeared before as part of a larger Handbook, which covers the whole of English History. As it is possible that the book may be of use to busy persons who have not much time to spare for searching for the names of books on subjects in which they are interested, a list of books of History and Biography, and of books on social and economical subjects, has been added. In the Appendix lists of Acts connected with Labour, Factories, trade-unions, etc, have been added and Tables concerning the Reform Acts of 1832 and 1867-68, the House of Lords and the House of Commons. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.
Excerpt from A Handbook in Outline of the Political History of England to 1906 IT is hoped that this little book may be found useful to those who are interested in English Politics, and to the general reader of English His tory and Political Biography. It may tend to give clearness and exact ness of outline where, for those who have not unusually good memories, there may be an occasional haziness. As a companion to larger books, it may supply in a small space information which is not always readily at hand. We believe, also, that those who are specially interested in the politics of the last half century, may find here, within moderate limits, an adequate statement of the more important facts. The history of British political thought has been one of the most fertile fields of Anglo-American historical writing in the last half-century. David Armitage brings together an interdisciplinary and international team of authors to consider the impact of this scholarship on the study of early modern British history, English literature, and political theory. Leading historians survey the impact of the history of political thought on the 'new' histories of Britain and Ireland; eminent literary scholars offer novel critical methods attentive to literary form, genre, and language; and distinguished political theorists treat the relationship of history and theory in studies of rights and privacy. The outstanding examples of critical practice collected here will encourage the emergence of fresh research on the historical, critical, and theoretical study of the English-speaking world in the period around 1500–1800. This volume celebrates the contribution of the Folger Institute to British studies over many years.
