Abstract: A comprehensive collection of educational materials produced by government, professional, and voluntary organizations and agencies includes descriptions of available printed and audiovisual materials on maternal and infant care for the general public and health professionals. Listings of materials are arranged under each organization, together with a brief description of the organization's purpose and goals. All entries specify how to order the materials, many of which are free of charge. Topics include prenatal care, normal pregnancy and delivery, infancy (up to 1 year), child care and growth, developmental problems and disabilities, parent education, workplace and environmental hazards affecting pregnancy, risk factors (alcohol, drugs, smoking), nutrition, breastfeeding, exercise, teenage pregnancy, genetic disorders, infant death syndrome, child abuse and neglect, safety of infant products, vital statistics, and family planing.
The main aim of this practical Handbookis to strengthen counselling and communication skills of skilled attendants (SAs) and other health providers, helping them to effectively discuss with women, families and communities the key issues surrounding pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, postnatal and post-abortion care. Counselling for Maternal and Newborn Health Careis divided into three main sections. Part 1 is an introduction which describes the aims and objectives and the general layout of the Handbook. Part 2 describes the counselling process and outlines the six key steps to effective counselling. It explores the counselling context and factors that influence this context including the socio-economic, gender, and cultural environment. A series of guiding principles is introduced and specific counselling skills are outlined. Part 3 focuses on different maternal and newborn health topics, including general care in the home during pregnancy; birth and emergency planning; danger signs in pregnancy; post-abortion care; support during labor; postnatal care of the mother and newborn; family planning counselling; breastfeeding; women with HIV/AIDS; death and bereavement; women and violence; linking with the community. Each Session contains specific aims and objectives, clearly outlining the skills that will be developed and corresponding learning outcomes. Practical activities have been designed to encourage reflection, provoke discussions, build skills and ensure the local relevance of information. There is a review at the end of each session to ensure the SAs have understood the key points before they progress to subsequent sessions.
Abstract: A guide for health providers who work in perinatal health care systems provides a variety of ideas and successful approaches for promoting breastfeeding among low-income women, based on the premise that breastfeeding is the best method for feeding infants in the early months of life. The material is organized into 4 principal sections covering background information on various aspects of breastfeeding, specifically for low-income women; approaches to breast-feeding education at each of the 4 distinct phases of the prenatal and postpartum periods; sample lesson plans that may be used by health professionals or paraprofessionals in individual or group sessions; and a tabulation of references and resources for the use of health professionals in breastfeeding promotion efforts. Abstracts: This report presents the highlights of the Surgeon General's Workshop on Breastfeeding and Human Lactation. The recommendations which came out of the workshop were: (1) Improve professional education in human lactation and breastfeeding. (2) Develop public education and promotional efforts. (3) Strengthen the support for breastfeeding in the health care system. (4) Develop a broad range of support services in the community. (5) Initiate a national breastfeeding promotional effort directed to women in the World of work. (6) Expand research on human lactation and breastfeeding.
