A breakout new detective series, from the author of the spine-tingling SCARLET AND IVY series, beautifully illustrated by Hannah Peck.
Detective Matt Cordell was happily married once, and gainfully employed, and sober. But that was before he caught his wife cheating on him with one of his operatives and took it out on the man with the butt end of a .45. Now Matt makes his home on the streets of New York and his only companions are the city’s bartenders. But trouble still knows how to find him, and when Johnny Bridges shows up from the old neighborhood, begging for Matt’s help, Cordell finds himself drawn into a case full of beautiful women and bloody murder. It’s just like the old days – only this time, when the beatings come, he may wind up on the receiving end...
A breakout new detective series, from the author of the spine-tingling SCARLET AND IVY series, beautifully illustrated by Hannah Peck. Violet Veil wants nothing more than to prove her worth and become her father's apprentice at Veil & Sons Undertakers. And one rain-soaked night she gets her chance when she meets a boy, Oliver, who is wandering around the graveyard. Only, the last time Violet saw Oliver, he was indoors and very much dead, waiting to be buried. Violet has just found her first case, and it doesn't get bigger than this: can she, with the help of her dog, Bones, help Oliver solve his own 'murder'?
When a man gets to be a hundred years old, and is an Appleby, he should be able to look forward to spending the rest of his life quietly, comfortably, and free from care. So William Appleby, known as The Ancient to his large respectable family and his neighbours, thought. There was the celebration of his hundredth birthday to look forward to, of course, and then the marriage of his favourite great-granddaughter, Barbara, but aside from that, supposedly, just his everyday routine. The Ancient and the rest of the Appleby clan certainly never expected to be confronted with murder! But murder struck, in the midst of the lovely countryside, close to the heart of the clan: decisively, brutally, skilfully. Scotland Yard had a difficult time indeed discovering who the murderer was, because the indomitable front of the Appleby family covered the traces quickly and proudly, in spite of the terror, the distress and the shock that murder brings with it.
When archaeologist Thomas Ashley is invited to remote Devonshire by Lucian Mallory to examine and decipher millennia-old papyrus scrolls, he is unable to resist the offer, despite knowing of Mallory's sinister and unsavory reputation. The scrolls, retrieved from an ancient necropolis, purportedly contain Egyptian secrets of resurrection and immortality. From the moment of Ashley's arrival, it is clear something is terribly wrong: a gruesome murder has been committed, and everyone is fearful a madman is on the loose. But the truth is far more shocking. As the murders continue, Ashley works to uncover the secrets contained in the scrolls and begins to glimpse the horrific reality of Mallory's inscrutable plan ... Originally published as a limited edition Arkham House hardcover and long out of print, The Third Grave (1981) is a chilling tale by David Case (1937-2018), an undeservedly neglected master of literary horror. Two volumes of Case's best short fiction are also available from Valancourt. "Case should be considered among the half-dozen finest living practitioners of the horror story." - Michael Dirda, The Washington Post "Let us hear more of David Case . . . The field needs more from the author of 'The Hunter', a modern classic worthy to stand beside 'The Most Dangerous Game'." - Ramsey Campbell

Soils have important roles to play in criminal and environmental forensic science. Since the initial concept of using soil in forensic investigations was mooted by Conan Doyle in his Sherlock Holmes stories prior to real-world applications, this branch of forensic science has become increasingly sophisticated and broad. New techniques in chemical, physical, biological, ecological and spatial analysis, coupled with informatics, are being applied to reducing areas of search by investigators, site identification, site comparison and measurement for the eventual use as evidence in court. Soils can provide intelligence, in assisting the determination of the provenance of samples from artifacts, victims or suspects, enabling their linkage to locations or other evidence. They also modulate change in surface or buried cadavers and hence affect the ability to estimate post-mortem or post-burial intervals, and locate clandestine graves. This interdisciplinary volume explores the conceptual and practical interplay of soil and geoforensics across the scientific, investigative and legal fields. Supported by reviews, case-studies from across the world, and reports of original research, it demonstrates the increasing convergence of a wide range of knowledge. It covers conceptual issues, evidence (from recovery to use in court), geoforensics, taphonomy, as well as leading-edge technologies. The application of the resultant soil forensics toolbox is leading to significant advances in improving crime detection, and environmental and national security.
Psychic and medium Christine Holohan tells how she helped solve the murder case that rocked the police, giving vital evidence that science would only catch up with 2 years later. A Voice From the Grave tells the chilling real-life story of a woman haunted by horrific visions of the death of Jacqui Poole in 1983. From her first encounter with Jacqui Poole's spirit through interviews with police and subsequent discoveries, Christine's story demonstrates that it is never too late for justice and makes a wholly compelling argument for life after death and the spirit world.
