Burnaby was a captain in the British Army who spent his winter leave of absence of 1876 riding 2000 miles through Asiatic Turkey, on the eve of the Russo-Turkish War. Burnaby questioned everyone he met regarding the imminent war; the author believed, from the impressions of his informants, that the Ottoman Empire would probably lose.
