The origin of the Virginia Flemings, and presumably those in Pennsylvania, is Scotland. The first Fleming to land in Virginia was William Fleming who arrived in Norfolk in August of 1755, although he may have arrived as early as 1751. William Fleming is reported to have been born in Jedburgh, Scotland on February 17, 1728. He later married Anne Christian. Together, they had 13 or 14 children, with only 7 surviving. William Fleming died on August 5, 1795, at Bell Mont, Virginia. Their descendants lived in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Tennessee, Kentucky, and elsewhere.
Robert Fleming, son of William Fleming and Jennie Buchanan, was born ca. 1773 in Ireland. He emigrated ca. 1806. He married Elizabeth Stembaugh, daughter of John Phillip Stumbaugh and Elizabeth, in 1809 in Maryland.
Archibald Fleming was born in about 1744 in Delaware. He married Sarah in about 1770 in Pennsylvania. They had ten children. He died 1 March 1813 in Loudoun County, Virginia. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Virginia, Ohio, Illinois and Kansas.
Lists about 2500 books found in major libraries throughout the U. S. containing genealogies of families from Virginia and West Virginia. The books listed deal with families of Virginia origins but often follow their descendants far and wide across the continent. Each book is listed under the surname of the primary Virginia family covered in it. Many of the titles listed deal with several families, not all of which may have Virginia roots. Citations to all these allied families are listed in a cross-reference table, regardless of the geographic focus of the family, making this bibliography of use to researchers with interests outside Virginia also.
