Dismissed in early years as a wasteland, the rolling open country that covers the interior parts of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho is today one of the richest farmlands in the nation. This work is the story of its transformation. Meinig traces all of the aspects of its development by combining geographic description with historical narrative.
The Necklace has been around for centuries, and when Max learns that two members are attending a Burning Man like festival in the Southwest, he and his girlfriend Pam see a chance to strike their next blow for freedom.
The ideas and emotions that make the book of Psalms such a powerful text for Judaism and Christianity alike are brilliantly captured in this deft translation by a scholar of Judaism. Aaron Lichtenstein offers the English translation in verse, just as the original Hebrew text is in poetry, in the various poetic modes required by the myriad moods and messages. Readers will be moved by the inspiring words of the Psalms in this essential resource.
This book offers a meaningful and practicable guide to better management of arsenic problems in the groundwater of the Gangetic Plain. It gathers contributions from distinguished researchers who have been actively working in the area for over a decade. The arsenic contamination of groundwater is a growing concern in the central Gangetic Plain, where the local population’s main sources of fresh water are surface water, groundwater and rain water; of these sources, only the last two generally meet the most important criteria for drinking water in their natural state. Natural geological changes are presumed to be the primary reason for arsenic contamination in this region. Further, most of the people living in this area have developed the habit of drinking water (groundwater) from the arsenic-contaminated tubewells in many parts of the region. As a result, many are suffering from arsenicosis and many more are at risk. Since the cause of arsenic contamination in groundwater still remains unclear, this book seeks to address the arsenic issue in this region by pursuing a holistic and systematic scientific approach. Accordingly, it delineates various sources, processes, hypotheses and remedial approaches that are needed to manage the arsenic contamination in the Central Gangetic Plain.
The book constitutes an elementary course on Plane Euclidean Geometry, pitched at pre-university or at advanced high school level. It is a concise book treating the subject axiomatically, but since it is meant to be a first introduction to the subject, excessive rigour is avoided, making it appealing to a younger audience as well. The aim is to cover the basics of the subject, while keeping the subject lively by means of challenging and interesting exercises. This makes it relevant also for students participating in mathematics circles and in mathematics olympiads. Each section contains several problems, which are not purely drill exercises, but are intended to introduce a sense of 'play' in mathematics, and inculcate appreciation of the elegance and beauty of geometric results. There is an abundance of colour pictures illustrating results and their proofs. A section on hints and a further section on detailed solutions to all the exercises appear at the end of the book, making the book ideal also for self-study.
