The interplay between the form and infrastructure of modern cities produces spatial and temporal dimensions which allow for erratic growth and fragmentary perception. Though their origins can be clearly seen in urban development since the Renaissance, density, movement, and pace in contemporary cities increase as meaningful boundaries are erased by rising consumption of services and a spate of traffic (automobile, communication, utility). While property values limit accessibility to inner urban space, the city expands outwardly, generally following the path of least resistance. In so doing, the increased demands on infrastructure cleave existing urban textures, creating anomalies in the landscape. As a result, large open spaces for public use are either dislocated (to suburbia), restricted (institutionalized where most public), or simply "left over" as remnants of previous programs (abandoned buildings) or the fall-out of large scale construction (highways, public transport, utilities, etc.). The potential of these latter spaces for public use is often unrecognized. This thesis will argue that due to their very natur~, cities produce such spaces by default and that they can be employed for public use as a frontier in the urban psyche. The design for such a frontier would support a variety of programs based on public events. As soon as one event takes place, another would follow according to the rhythm of the city. In this way, it could act as a stabilizer by activating places which are really just dormant and providing a permanent fixture for civic activity.

In a globalizing world, frontiers may be in flux but they remain as significant as ever. New borders are established even as old borders are erased. Beyond lines on maps, however, borders are spatial zones in which distinctive architectural, graphic, and other design elements are deployed to signal the nature of the space and to guide, if not actually control, behaviour and social relations within it. This volume unpacks how manipulations of space and design in frontier zones, historically as well as today, set the stage for specific kinds of interactions and convey meanings about these sites and the experiences they embody. Frontier zones organize an array of functions to facilitate the passage of goods, information, and people, and to define and control access. Bringing together studies from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and North America, this collection of essays casts a wide net to consider borders of diverse sorts. Investigations of contemporary political frontiers are set within the context of examinations of historical borders, borders that have existed within cities, and virtual borders. This range allows for reflection on shifts in how frontier zones are articulated and the impermanence of border emplacements, as well as on likely scenarios for future frontiers. This text is unique in bringing together a number of scholarly perspectives in the arts and humanities to examine how spatial and architectural design decisions convey meaning, shape or abet specific social practices, and stage memories of frontier zones that no longer function as such. During the last decade, the South American continent has seen a strong push for transnational integration, initiated by the former Brazilian president Fernando Henrique Cardoso, who (with the endorsement of eleven other nations) spearheaded the Initiative for the Integration of Regional Infrastructure in South America (IIRSA), a comprehensive energy, transport, and communications network. The most aggressive transcontinental integration project ever planned for South America, the initiative systematically deploys ten east-west infrastructural corridors, enhancing economic development but raising important questions about the polarizing effect of pitting regional needs against the colossal processes of resource extraction. Providing much-needed historical contextualization to IIRSA’s agenda, Beyond the City ties together a series of spatial models and offers a survey of regional strategies in five case studies of often overlooked sites built outside the traditional South American urban constructs.
