In accordance with applicable legislative requirements, the Nashville District Corps of Engineers has conducted a cultural resources reconnaissance of 40 proposed stream rehabilitation sites and 25 proposed disposal sites located in the Cumberland River basin of Whitley, Knox, Bell, and Harlan Counties, Kentucky, sand Campbell County, Tennessee. The proposed project includes the removal of stream flow obstructions within the Upper Cumberland River mainstream source streams, and tributary streams and the disposal of materials at preselected sites. This stream project was funded by the Applachian Regional Commission. Archival information suggested that archeological evidence of historic water-powered mills might be present at several project sites. No evidence of this was identified in the field examination. Information from the State of Kentucky indicated that numerous prehistoric archeological and National Register sites were known to the counties involved. None of the sites will be affected by the project. The field work resulted in the identification of cultural resources at eight of the project work sites. All but one were historic sites and features in varying states of preservation. Recommendation included in this report.
