Wang (humanities, California State U.) studies six of Wilson's plays, including The Piano Lesson, Seven Guitars, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, and Fences. He treats each play separately and examines the thematic strands running through them, especially as the relate to the struggle of African-Americans to come to grips with their history, their place in American society, and their struggle for a just society. Turner discovered new species; contributed several of the early anatomical studies of crayfish and bird brains; developed new methodologies, several of which are still used; clarified several behavioral and methodological issues in tropisms, memory, and behavioral ecology; and was the first to provide experimental evidence that certain insects can hear airborne sounds. He accomplished much of his scientific work when he was a high school biology teacher, and several of the 27 papers assembled here focus on his devotion to civil rights and conviction that education was the key to equality. The biographical section includes obituaries and remembrances by family and colleagues. Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).

The purpose of this monograph is threefold: to explore the development of modern black nationalist thought of the 1960s and 1970s and locate it within the tradition of modern black nationalism and cultural revitalization that emerged during the early decades of the 20th century; to demonstrate how a group of musicians operating in the style of American jazz music referred to as the New Black Music embraced the various tenets of modern black nationalism and attempted to put these ideas into practice in the production of their music; and to demonstrate how the study of music can be utilized effectively to enhance our understanding of cultural, political and social phenomena in American society.
