Excerpt from A New Grammar of the English Language The following Grammar differs, in many respects, from the Grammars most in use; but it is only in the treatment of the Verb that these differences are import ant. The scholar who is taught that a and the are arti cles, and that each, every, &c. Are pronouns, and he who is taught that they are adjectives, would doubtless use them alike in Speaking and writing; but the Verb holds such a commanding rank among words, and is susceptible of so many modifications, that the inculcation of errors in regard to it must lead to errors in composition. That portion of the Grammar, therefore, which treats of the Verb should be carefully examined before it is approved or condemned. The Syntax occupies less space in this Grammar than in most others but that Will not be considered a fault, if it shall be found to embrace all that is necessary. Excerpt from The English Language and Its Grammar In view of such a necessity in high and normal schools, the author combines in this book the history and derivation of English forms of speech with an analysis of the language and its functions. If the technical terms (which are employed because only by them can the science of language he presented) are mastered in the beginning, the student will find no difficulty in following the author's method to'the end. It will be easy to trace the logical consistency of the language with itself, and the harmony of its develop ment, which together give our glorious English tongue its expansive and expressive power. It will also be ap parent how this language has been able to subordinate all the accidents of an increasing vocabulary to the normal functions of a generous and flexible continuity of life. While this book is especially designed for normal and training schools and teacher-training classes in high schools, it is hoped that it will be found. Valuable as a means of self-help to large numbers of teachers who are striving to secure a better preparation for their work. It is thought that it is also well adapted for use in the summer schools which are now so prominent a fea ture of the educational work of the country. Excerpt from A Complete Scientific Grammar of the English Language English Grammar is at present in the same condition in which Copernicus found Astronomy, when it was taught that the earth is the great centre of the Universe, and that the sun, moon, planets, and stars revolve about it once in twenty-four hours. The text books are filled with a mass of absurdity and contradiction totally unworthy of the name of science; and the time and labor of those who use them are worse than wasted. This state of things is a disgrace to the scholarship of the age, and calls loudly for a reformation. The absolute truth of these statements can easily be demonstrated; but there is no room in this volume for such matter. Lest, however, any one should think the author to be peculiar and extreme in his views, let a few others be heard. President Eliot, of Harvard University, says "I consider the present system of teaching English Grammar in our elementary schools irrational and fruitless." Prof. Child, of the same University, says "I do not know that I ever before saw an English Grammar which I would permit my children to look into, so great the chance has been that they would learn nothing or be taught something false." The New England Journal of Education agrees with Mr. Epes Sargent in calling our ordinary grammars "a blot on American scholarship." The New York Evening Post refers to the common system as "an ii rational system"; and the Maryland School Journal calls it "a nauseous mixture for unfortunate juveniles." Similar testimonies might be multiplied indefinitely; and they seem to harmonize perfectly with the author's views. They are undoubtedly sound testimonies; and there is in fact abundant reason for the almost universal dissatisfaction with English Grammar as taught in our schools. Excerpt from A Grammar of the English Language In this new and revised edition of my Grammar, besides availing myself of whatever new light the last seventeen years have thrown upon the principles of the science, I have given much greater prominence than before to the practical exercises. The examples, both those for illustration and those for practice, are more numerous than in the original edition; and they are in each case brought into immediate connection with the rule or the definition which they are intended to illustrate. A child of ordinary capacity can hardly go through these exercises without becoming thoroughly familiar with the principles which they exemplify.
