Bachelor Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Economy - Transport Economics, grade: 1,5, University of applied sciences Dortmund, language: English, abstract: Since January 2013, the long-distance transportation market in Germany has been deregulated due to the amendment of the Passenger Transport Act (Personenbeförderungsgesetz). This means that, in the future, long-distance buses may operate on routes where they were previously not allowed, to protect the interest of the railways. Following the opening up of the market in 2013, more and more long-distance bus companies have penetrated the market and a major price war has ensued. The Deutsche Bahn AG had initially underestimated the competition, and is now trying to regain passengers through elaborate mar-keting ploys. The aim of this thesis is to compare two very different modes of transport, namely railbound long-distance transport and long-distance bus transport. Various criteria that affect the subjective trip perception of an average passenger are listed. To complete the comparison, domestic air transport is also briefly discussed, as this is also a mode of long-distance transport. The comparison yields a differentiated view of the modes of transport and various positive and negative features can be highlighted. Nevertheless, a recommendation for or against a party is not possible in this work, as it is highly dependent on the personal preferences of the passenger. But the fact is that the various providers do not share the same competitive conditions. Till this situation is not regulated by law, a fair comparison cannot take place in any case.

Using Germany as a case study, the author explains the dichotomous system of a market with licenses for commercial services, where operators are granted exclusivity, and licenses for non-commercial services, where supplementary direct subsidies are tendered out by public transport authorities. The empirical analysis is based on primary data usually not publicly available, and supplemented by numerous expert interviews. This thesis will examine the chances of new start-ups in the German CEP indus-try. Starting with a general market analysis to get an overview, a literature analy-sis regarding this topic followed by an analysis of the existing start-ups in the CEP industry in Germany, has been conducted. Based on the insights of that research, a scope for the most promising business models has been set. The scope is to focus on same-day deliveries within a mid and long transportation range in Germany. With the defined scope, two promising business models, crowdshipping and trans-portation with long distance buses, have be chosen and compared against each other, with the help pf a SWOT analysis and expert interviews. Finally, the most promising one, crowdshipping, has been examined in more detail with a business case calculation for their business case. Concluding this research has shown, that the German CEP industry has the potential to be disrupted by new business mod-els, entering the market.

The intercity bus market in Germany was deregulated in 2013. As a consequence, there is now a dense network of intercity bus lines. For the first time, the German state-owned railway company Deutsche Bahn AG faces intermodal competition in public intercity passenger land transport on a large number of lines. This paper examines market entry factors for intercity bus companies and price reactions of the incumbent railway company from a theoretical perspective. Our model builds on Salop's circular city model to describe the horizontal product differentiation among the bus companies. At the same time, the railway company occupies the center of the circle and offers a higher product quality than the buses. It dominates the market, while a number of bus companies constitute an oligopolistic competitive fringe. In the subsequent comparative statics analysis, it is shown that the quality differential between the train and bus services have a considerable effect on market entry decisions by buses as well as on price reactions by the incumbent railway company. In particular, on routes where the quality advantage of railway services is rather small, buses are more likely to enter and the railway company will respond with a stronger price reduction than on other routes.
