A technical discussion that includes theory, research, and application, this book describes warning design standards and guidelines; aspects of law relevant to warnings such as government regulations, case/trial litigation, and the role of expert testimony in these cases; and international, health/medical, and marketing issues. Broken into thirteen
This book is based on the proceedings of the Ergonomics Society's 1992 Annual Conference Birmingham, England, 7-10 April 1992. It contains papers, covering environmental studies, musculoskeletal studies, working postures and anthropometry, safety, and military ergonomics.
The ubiquitous nature of transport signs on roadways, railways, and in airports can lead to an overload of visual information, yet little research has been done to understand the design and use of such signs from a driver‘s perspective. The Human Factors of Transport Signs explores key transport sign research and examines new technologies
Using a group of old and young drivers, six symbol signs were investigated in both laboratory and field settings. With six trials per sign, legibility distances, defined as the distance at which the sign is correctly identified from a menu, were collected. Two major findings emerged: first is the successful development of a new laboratory simulation technique for the investigation of legibility distances. Correlations coefficients between laboratory and field legibility distances were computed and appear very promising. Large within subject variability was discovered in both age groups' data of legibility distances, both in the laboratory and field trials. This variability led to alternative ways of defining the dependent variable equivalent to designs of past studies examining legibility distances of the same signs.
