The collection contains book auction catalogs from European countries, including but not limited to Germany, Austria, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. This collection does not include separately cataloged collections of French, British, and American book auction catalogs. These book auction catalogs were collected by the the Astor Library, the Lenox Library and the New York Public Library. The book auction catalogs were collected by library staff making acquisitions for the Library and by individual book collecting donors whose collections were deposited in the Library. Annotations fall into all of the following categories: fully priced, partially priced, the name of the consigner may be identified, the names of the purchasers (or their agents) may be identified. Provenance of the catalog may be indicated by an inscription, a bookplate, a library stamp and even occasionally by an invoice indicating the lots purchased and the name of the purchaser.
