Excerpt from A Brief History of Old Fort Niagara And it was the knowledge Of a carrying place around these falls that pointed out to those engaged in, and ambitious to control, the fur trade with the Western Indians, in which list La Salle stands out prominently, that a fortified store house at or near the end of this portage would be a priceless advantage to its possessors. And during the long period above referred to when France and England were making every effort to gain control of this locality, the fur traders rendered valuable services in furtherance of the ambitions of their respective nations, although, of course, these fur traders' object was a purely mercenary one. But the Indians, prompted thereto partly by the always enduring feuds between the Huron and Iroquois stocks, but mainly by their keen insight into the real ambitions of the white men faithful and friendly to the French and the English alternately, but only as fear of their strength or benefits to be derived from them impelled clearly foresaw the danger to their race if a stronghold was ever Obtained at the portage, and persistently refused to allow one to be erected; and it was only after a struggle of 50 years that France succeeded in getting near this spot a fortified structure, that prom ised to be, and though soon after removed seven miles distant to the mouth of the river, proved to be, a permanency. Excerpt from Old Fort Niagara: The Story of an Ancient Gateway to the West It was inot until the tribes, of the Mohawks, the Oneidas, the Senecas and the Cayugas had joined the Confederacy. That Atotarho and the Onondagas were won over; and their consent to enter the League was gained only by granting them unusualconcessions. It was agreed that the Onondagas should be the leading nation of the Confederacy; that their chief town should be the Federation capital where the great council of the League should be held and where its records should be preserved; and that the Onondaga Nation should be represented in the Council by thirteen senators while no other nation had more than ten. It was further agreed that no act of the Federation Council to which the Onondagas objected should be valid. Furthermore, to enhance the personal dignity of Atotarho, five Federal chiefs were designated as his special aides. Excerpt from Niagara Historical Society: Ttle of Fort George The reproach has frequently been cast upon us that Canada has no history; it might be said of us with far more justice that we do not know our own history. The various historical societies are, by their efforts, trying to wipe away this reproach, and we feel proud of following in the wake of the Lundy's Lane Historical Society in publishing a paper written by Capt. Cruikshank, who has well earned the title of the historian of the Niagara peninsula. Of the towns of Ontario not one we are sure possesses a history so eventful, so ancient, so interesting as Niagara, having been at different times a legislative, an educational, a military and a commercial centre, at one time occupied by the enemy and again a heap of smoking ruins, now a quiet summer resort with many points of historical interest, with wide streets shaded by old elms and having unrivalled lake and river scenery. The members of the youngest of these Historical Societies feel that they may congratulate themselves on being able to place in the hands of the public the story which so far has not yet been told of the Taking of Fort George, told too in a style so clear, so dispassionate, and shewing such deep research, a story of troublesome times, which so told can not but be helpful to old and young of every nationality. Asking for our first venture a kind reception we send it out to the public, hoping that it may do its part in proving that we have a not ignoble history which should inspire us to yet nobler deeds. Excerpt from Tales of the Niagara Frontier: In Two Parts; Part I, Queenston; Part II, Fort Niagara A few years ago, there resided in one Of the small towns in Western New York, a man apparently about fifty years of age, familiarly know in the neighborhood as the Captain. He was a man of moderate stature, with a countenance that seemed worn by fa tigue and the hardships of wind and weather; but possessing, for all that, an Openness and sincerity Of expression, that at once endear ed him to all who knew him. Though care less Of his person, he was engaging in his man ners and like all old soldiers, he was addict ed to fighting his battles over again whenever he could find a faithful and patient listener. Excerpt from Studies of the Niagara Frontier For the source books relating to the Niagara region London is, I think, the best hunting-ground, though the continental dealers are sometimes eccentric in their valua tion, and occasionally ofier rare works at lower prices than the leading dealers of London would consider just. The New York market is at times good, but never cheap; and always the book-auction is the collector's opportunity. Excerpt from Niagara Falls and Their History The rains that make its oods dislodge particles of soil, and wash them into the tributaries in such multitude that they discolor the water. The pebbles of its bed and the mud with which it is discolored are the river's load, which it transports from the face of the land to the bed of the sea. The tributaries of Niagara carry their loads only to the lakes, where the loads sink, and leave the water pure. Thus Niagara is ever clear. Sometimes, when storm waves lash the shores of Erie, a little sand is washed to the head of the river, and carried downstream; sometimes a little mud is washed into the river by the small creeks that reach its banks. Thus Niagara is not absolutely devoid of load, but its burden is so minute that it is hard to detect. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Niagara Campaign of 1759 The author was much gratified with the reception which his first modest pamphlet received and notes with pleasure that attention is being more and more turned to the history of the Niagara frontier, which is in itself a great compen sation for the research needed in producing this detailed account of the Niagara campaign of 1759. Excerpt from The Niagara River IN the endeavour to gather into one volume a proper de scription of the various interests that centre in and around the Niagara River the author of this book felt very sincerely the difficulties of the task before him. As the geologic wonder of a continent and the commercial marvel of the present century, the Niagara River is one of the most remarkable streams in the world. In historic interest, too, it takes rank with any American river. To combine, then, 1nto the pages of a single volume a proper treatment of this subject would be a task that perhaps no one could accomplish satisfactorily.
