This book deals with two important technologies in human-computer interaction: computer generation of synthetic speech and computer recognition of human speech. It addresses the problems in generating speech with varying precision of articulation and how to convey moods and attitudes.
During the last decade, the French-speaking scientific community developed a very strong research activity in the field of Knowledge Discovery and Management (KDM or EGC for “Extraction et Gestion des Connaissances” in French), which is concerned with, among others, Data Mining, Knowledge Discovery, Business Intelligence, Knowledge Engineering and SemanticWeb. The recent and novel research contributions collected in this book are extended and reworked versions of a selection of the best papers that were originally presented in French at the EGC 2009 Conference held in Strasbourg, France on January 2009. The volume is organized in four parts. Part I includes five papers concerned by various aspects of supervised learning or information retrieval. Part II presents five papers concerned with unsupervised learning issues. Part III includes two papers on data streaming and two on security while in Part IV the last four papers are concerned with ontologies and semantic.
The landscape is widely identified as a relevant target both by integrative policies and across the disciplines dealing with resource management and territorial planning. Landscape agronomy promotes a greater involvement of agricultural sciences into this arena by increasing the attention on the dynamics relating the farming practices to the natural resources and the temporal and spatial patterns of land covers. For many African Americans, getting a public sector job has historically been one of the few paths to the financial stability of the middle class, and in New York City, few such jobs were as sought-after as positions in the fire department (FDNY). For over a century, generations of Black New Yorkers have fought to gain access to and equal opportunity within the FDNY. Tracing this struggle for jobs and justice from 1898 to the present, David Goldberg details the ways each generation of firefighters confronted overt and institutionalized racism. An important chapter in the histories of both Black social movements and independent workplace organizing, this book demonstrates how Black firefighters in New York helped to create affirmative action from the "bottom up," while simultaneously revealing how white resistance to these efforts shaped white working-class conservatism and myths of American meritocracy.
