In the first census after the Civil War and the disease epidemics of the 1860s, many families in Bath county appear reduced by war and illness, but even more families were rebuilt - widows remarried and new children born. New immigrants had arrived from other Virginia counties & from Ireland to work on the railroad, and, for the first time, we see a listing of the ex-slave population of the county. Information includes: name, gender, age, race, occupation, birthplace, value of property owned, disabilities, school attendance, married within the year, twins, etc. This census taker even listed birth counties rather than just the required state. Illegible names have been checked against earlier and later censuses and other records for verification. Includes footnotes to clarify anomalies in the census, and index of heads-of-household & persons in the house with a different surname.
